Question:
PCOS help needed
Hello, everyone. I was hoping some of you could help me locate a doctor in Staten Island or the NYC area that is informed and aggressive with treating PCOS. I was DX with PCOS when I was 12, and here I am 13 years later with no help or meds :( The symptoms are getting worse (I've had one period in 5 months). I would prefer a GYN, since I really like my family doc now (she's just not "in the know" about PCOS). I'm tired of people telling me "just go on the pill". I need aggressive treatment ASAP. Thanks so much. p.s...I've tried every search engine, and the only docs are in Manhattan with very busy offices. — Kelly C. (posted on August 10, 2002)

Although I'm not in NY and can't help you find a doctor. I just wanted to
say that my 17 y/o daughter has PCOD and she sees a Endocrinologist. They
specialize in the disease. She is on the pill and glucophage, which is
adjusted periodically by the doctor and blood tests are taken. The doctor
said that it is much better to get this condition taken care of early to
avoid complications of later years from this disease. Best of Luck to you!

I don't live in your area so I cannot help you find a doctor
however I did want to let you know that I am 20 and have been
diagnosed with PCOS for a few years now. I am on glucophage
and progesterone (hormone replacement). The progesterone
helps where others take the pill. My doctor suggested it
because sometimes the pill isn't enough. I hope you find a
good dr soon. It is something that should be taken care of.
Good luck and God bless! If you have any questions please
feel free to email me!

You might consider visiting the soulcysters.com website if you haven't
already. I also have pcos, and have found that site to be a wealth of
info--it has very active bulletin boards (including boards to "find a
doc"), links to research articles, etc. Good luck to you.

I cannot help you with the finding a doctor issue- but agree with other
posters- see a ENDOCRINOLOGIST! Visit www.soulcysters.net

I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I agree that you would be better off to
see an endocrinologist. I went to a gyn that I loved and admired for years.
I went to him because of irregular periods and he always blamed my
weight(as did my pcp for ALL of my health prolems). As time progressed and
my periods became worse and less frquent his story remained the same. But
he did put me through countless ultrasounds and blood tests and finally
decided I must have ovarian cancer and ruined a Christmas waiting for ct
scan results. After every thing was negative I allowed him to give me shots
of harmones that were supposed to bring on the periods and make me regular
(they just made me miserable). Then one day I went to see an
endocrinologist for a new problem with my thyroid and he KNEW I had PCOS
from the interview and did blood work to confirm it. Man could I have been
saved some heartache as well as years of physical discomfort! God luck to
you! God bless!
