Question:
Will a eating disorder in your past prevent or delay insurance approval?
I just faxed the last of my records to my surgeon and in doing so was reading over them. In one medical record the doctor stated I had an eating disorder which I did at that time. i am a diabetic and if you let your sugar run high it will assit you in loosing weight. However I no longer do that and was in counseling for a while and it has been 4 years since then. Do you think this will make the insurance deny this surgery and or do you think it will prompt more requirments from me before I can be approved? Thank you — Rebekah P. (posted on August 2, 2002)

I don't really think you would have to worry about an eating disorder. Us
obese people eat alot and that is considered to be an eating disorder of
some type. If it was that long ago too, and you have medical records
showing you have gotten help and so forth I say you should be in the clear.
I was also diabetic(type2) before the surgery, no longer am since my
surgery day(april 15th) so good luck, and don't give up hope.

REBECCA
Hi am a closet bulimic and am approved to see a surgeon on aug 23, 2002
what you need to do is get records that prove you saw a professional
phychyatrist about your eating disorder. That should be enough. Make sure
to list all meds and treatments you went through. Also if you have not done
this recently get a phychiatrist to do your evaluation and get him or her
to write a letter for you stateing you are cofident enough and responisible
to handle all aspects of the surgery. If you want i can send you the copy
of my phych letter that the doctor gave me. I REALLY HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE.
