Question:
Anyone with information who has Type 1 diabetes since childhood?
I am looking to speak with someone who has had the surgery or is thinking of having this surgery, who is type 1 dependent. I have had it for almost 20 years and am researching this surgery. I see many notes about people who have type 2 but not much about type 1. I am also on the pump and am 28 years old with a bmi of 41.1. My doctor agrees that this will assist me and make it so much better plus i have many other complications. My worry is after the surgery and the low sugars.. Anyone with any advice or thoughts please let me know. I have a date with the surgeon on July 31st, 2002, for a consultation. Thank you — Rebekah P. (posted on July 11, 2002)

Hi, Rebekah! I have been a Juvenile or Type 1 Diabetic since I was 4 years
old. My approval process has gone fairly quick. I was approved for
evaluation appts (4 of them) on Nov 30, 2002 and I was approved for RNY
surgery on Jan 17, 2003...so about 1 1/2 mo. My surgery is on Feb 20,
2003. We will have to keep in touch and see how each others sugars, etc
are going. What insullin are you on? I am taking Humalog prn and Lantus 52u
1xd. I am 28 years old. My Dr thinks it is going to be a great tool in
getting my IDDM under control.

I have had Type 1 diabetes since I was 18, not exactly a child, but Type 1
nonetheless. I had my surgery in May and am down 89 pounds. My insulin
needs have decreased quite a bit. I had planned on starting to take Lantus
post-op, but haven't started it yet. I was in pretty good control pre-op,
though, so that wasn't an issue for me. My endo is delighted with my loss
so far. It's almost as if she had a direct hand in it. Good luck and let
me know how it goes. I'm glad to see more people with Type 1 posting. It
gives more information to those who come behind us. Good luck!
