First question is how much water are you getting in per day? You should be
getting in 64 oz of water a day. That may be your problem in the
beginning. How far out are you in your surgery and are you taking any
antibiotics? That's another culprit that can cause constipation. I know
what cleans me out and that is canned spinach with white vinegar. Try to
increase your vegetables and see if that works. If not, then medical
intervention may have to come into play (enema, suppositories, etc.) I
hope this helps. (Tina Torrey, 60" distal RNY 08/28/01 -90 lbs gone

Someone just asked a very similar question earlier. Here's what I did, cuz
I have had this problem, too. Every day eat something high fiber: a small
bowl of high fiber cereal, some oatmeal, 100% whole wheat bread, OR some
high fiber fruit. "White" carbs (white bread, pasta, rice,
potatoes, etc.) aren't gonna improve things for you. You need FIBER. And
the more fiber in the carb foods you eat, the less carbs are absorbed by
your body--they pass right on thru. Which is what you want! You say you are
using supplements for protein. How about adding a little oat bran to your
shakes? I used to do that with smoothies. It gives them a nutty flavor and
a pleasant texture. A smoothie with oat bran and fresh strawberries might
just loosen things up. And it sounds really yummy! LOL

I take a Fiber Choice sugar free chewable tablet once a day. They are
pretty good actually...tastes like a orange sweet tart. If all else fails,
there's always Milk of Magnesia and Fleet suppositories. Good luck.

After Colace, Ex-lax, supossitories, I found the best remedy was some
regular flavored, instant oatmeal every morning. I put a little butter,
splenda and lactaid on it. If I miss a day, I suffer. Cheap, no cramps or
"montezumas revenge" and it works within 30 minutes (for me at
least). Best wishes!

I try to drink a small glass of prune juice in the morning when I am
constipated. Lately, I have been eating more dried fruits and nuts for a
snack/meal, and that seems to make a BIG difference for me...no more
problems. Be careful tho, fats/calories can be high with nuts. Best of
luck to you!

I had problems of this nature in the first 5 weeks after surgery. I've
upped my fruit (just a little a day does it) and/or I eat popcorn (not the
kernals and chew, chew, chew!) This seems to have helped. Good Luck!

I have had this problem since surgery. I started eating a serving (1/4
cup)of raisins every day as my daughter's doctor had suggested for her
constipation. I have been regular every day since I started eating them.
Good luck and I hope this works for you, Diane

I had severe constipation and I found that using a Fleet enema really
helps.
