Question:
Is there anyone out there 5 years or more ?
Today I went to my family dr for a check up as I had my surgery on 4/3 and thought I should see her . I did not get to see her pre op as she was out and I saw the covering dr . At that time the covering DR and the Rn both thought I was making a good move having this surgery . Today my regular Dr told me she did not approve of the surgery and that yes I would lose 100lb in the next year but that so many have so many problems and that what I really needed was to get therapy for eating . She told that she could not believe that the surgery was even legal and that the insurance company paid for that type of surgery . THat in 5 years I will put it all back on and that I will have nothing but problems with eating . I left feeling very depressed and upset . Has anyone out there post ob more then 3 years . Can you tell me how u are doing . — sallie P. (posted on April 23, 2002)

7.5 yrs here. You didn't say what kind of surgery you had. Some WILL fail,
mechanical breakdown, not "enough" surgery to do the job. But
some will NOT fail. If given a post-op plan that covers everything, the
food thing shouldn't be a problem. Nutrtional problems do not HAVE to
occur, either. That's why supplemental nutrition is available. The stuff is
made for people who cannot process foods in the normal way, be it
surgically induced or otherwise caused. We do not HAVE to be sick and we
do not HAVE to have problems. Sounds like a SEVERE case of fat hating to
me. Will power, INDEED! Name me one skinny person that has OUR will power
after 40 yrs of dieting!

I am sorry I forgot to add that I had RNY lap on 4/3 . Because of the
DR'S total disapproval I am thinking on changing Dr's so if there is anyone
out there from Millville NJ with a good family DR let me know . Thanks

My mother had a surgery similar to the RNY in 1976. She is alive and well,
and still thin. Some doctors just really anger me with their own
stupidity!

Dont walk run to a new doctor. I was lucky mine was willing to learn, I got
him books, told him about this web site.
A doctor that is not willing to learn is not worth your time or your life.
I am only 3 months out, I have a long way to go, and my doctor will be
there for every step.
There are great doctors out there.
Best of luck on your new life.

I am sorry, I am not perfect, but let me tell you... YOUR DOCTOR IS A
MORON.. FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR IMMEDIATLY.. SHE SOUNDS LIKE AN UNEDUCATED AND
INSENSITIVE PERSON. As a doctor they should be that much more sensitive
than the everyday person. WHAT A JACKASS!
(sorry)

I am still pre-op, but I can tell you, people do lose the weight and keep
it off. My dad had the surgery 18 years ago and he has kept the weight
off. He lost over 200 lbs. Your doctor needs education both in morbid
obesity and in bedside manner. You did the right thing for yourself. Take
care.

I agree with some of the other posters - I believe you need to find another
PCP. Her comments seem to be out of an uneducated, somewhat in the dark
set of mind when it comes to bariatric surgery. She sounds as though she
is thinking from the old school. My PCP was extremely educated on the
subject and was the one who supported me the most. It's like with
everything else in life - you've got to take what is truth for you and
leave the rest behind. Everyone has opinions - fear based teaching in
anything seems to come from shear stupidity in a subject. You hang in
there and go where your heart may lead you.

Your PCP must have the worlds worst bedside manor of any dr I've ever heard
of. And she obviously does not keep up with current medical trends and
information. Obesity has been classified a disease and therefore medical
treatment is warrented in some cases not just therepy for your eating
habits. Not everyone who is obese overeats some of us out there truly do
have medical reasons why. I think you should print out these responses and
give them to your Dr at the time you tell her you are getting a new PCP and
make sure she understands she has lost a valuable client due to her
stupidity and lack of compassion and also tell her that you have told
everyone you know what a lousy dr she is. She is obviously one of those few
people who got into the medical profession for the money only and does not
really care about her patients. I think it's a very good thing she was out
before you had the surgery and your very lucky to find out now what kind of
a person she really is. God Bless you and good luck finding a more
supportive Dr.

WOW-your doctor sounds like she is totally out of touch with the medical
world! Find a new PCP!!! I am 7 days away from my surgery (open RNY) and I
work for a doctor who is the Dean of a medical school and my boss AND my
PCP seem more excited about this surgery than I am! Really, they are both
learning all the latest info on WLS and even held a seminar at the local
hospital to train the hospital workers how to deal with patients who have
had wls and come there for other treatment (they don't actually do the wls
there but want to be informed)Some doctors , such as your PCP refuse to
keep up with the latest technology. So good luck finding a new one!! And by
the way, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
