Question:
Has anyone with1 kidney ever had WLS? Will this hinder me?
Can anyone give me any insight? I was born with one kidney and have never had problems with it in the past. I have my first meeting with the surgeon in a couple weeks and am nervous that this may hinder my chances of approval. Does anyone have a single kidney and had surgery? If so, I would love to hear from you! Thanks! Tracy — Tracy T. (posted on January 14, 2002)

Tracy, I don't personally have the problem, but was hospitalized at the
same time with a woman who did have one kidney, and was just closely
monitored for her urine output, her BUN and creatinine, etc. She had one
of hers removed because of kidney disease, however, and she still was
approved. Because yours is a congenital anomaly, I'm sure that you
shouldn't have a problem, given that your nephrologist approves of it, and
is willing to follow you carefully in the hospital. I would also do
research if I were you on the toll that it will take on your kidneys; I
can't imagine any more so than dieting would, and the benefits of not
developing diabetes (if you don't already have it) or being hypertensive
will certainly outweigh the risks, I would think. Good Luck! I hope you
don't have any problems with your approval, and are on your way to a
healthier, happier you very soon! :-)
