Question:
I need a good remedy for Burping
I am 14 months post op and have never had a problem with burping. However, my very good friend is 3 weeks post op and is dealing with almost continuous burping. It's not big, long, loud burps it's little popping type burps. It ALWAYS happens when she eats or drinks anything. Gas-X does not help. To me, it looks like she's doing everything exactly like she's supposed to. She doesn't drink with meals. She doesn't eat too much or too fast (I'm a witness to this!!) but she just burps all the time. Does anyone have any suggestions or remedies? A prescription perhaps? I'd hate to see burping make someone regret having this wonderful surgery. Thanks for your help! — ronascott (posted on January 2, 2002)

Rona, the best prescription for this problem is TIME. That new stomach and
rerouted intestine are confused and sensitive. In time, they will calm down
and the burping will lessen, probably to next to nothing. Just remind her
that the burping will go away, and ask her how does it really compare as a
problem to the pounds that are gone? :-)

Rona, I don't have an answer, but I have the same problem and I'm 15 months
out. I've been burping since the beginning, even when I drink water. I found
early on that if I did'nt burp I would throw up,so I find it as a blessing
as weird as that may sound. (I did'nt throw up that much).
I don't regret the surgery, Best of luck to you and your friend, still
burping..... Tish

this!!!!

Hi Rona: I am almost 5 mos post op and down 106#....I have burped from day
one....with anything I eat or drink...but I find that if I am eating, once
I burp, I can eat just 3 or 4 more bites. I think that it is just my
body's way of working my food down the shute :) I feel fortunate
though...one of my best friends is 8 mos post op and she is a
"tooter".....WHEWWW WEEEE!!! is she a tooter....(LOL) be glad
your friend is a burper....

I burped often with both my original surgery and the revision. You can just
call me Machine Gun Michelle. But it lasted for maybe 10-12 weeks, then
gradually dissipated. Don't know why. I wasn't annoyed by it, though,
usually felt good, just an interruption in my life, though.

I, too, had the burping. The first sip of juice they gave me produced the
most horrible growl you have ever heard. I thought they had hooked my new
stomach up wrong! LOL I continued to make noise--less and less--until about
month 5 or 6. Now I only growl and burp when I eat sugar or something my
new stomach has not tried before. I still can't figure out how it knows . .

This happens to me when I drink with meals or drink too fast. I've found
that I get too much air in when I drink normally and althought warned
against it, I try to use a straw, as it keeps the air out and no more
burping!

Just so your friend doesn't feel alone... I too constantly burp, some small
and some big, but ALL annoying.... ready to cry over it... I also cannot
keep most foods down most of the time... any suggestions would be much
appreciated!
