Question:
What is wrong with me? I am getting scared here.

Today is exactly 3 weeks since I had the open RNY surgery. Everything was going well until this past Monday. I woke up sick as a dog, having an extrememly bad case of diarhea. I was supposed to go get my staples out that day but couldn't even get out of bed. The next day was the same, although Tuesday nite, I started cramping so bad I thought I was going to die. It was as bad as labor pains. I managed to get to the doctor on Wednesday & he took some blood & gave me a prescription for lomotal & phenerghan. They called me back on Thursday & said my bloodwork really wasn't that bad, but if I felt I needed to go to the ER, then go. Thursday is the day I started dry heaving. I did not go to the ER because I thought I was feeling somewhat better, although not much. So here it is, 7 days later & I have basically only had water to drink (I am supposed to be on a pureed diet). Also, I have woken up the past couple of nites with my arms & legs feeling really weird. Not hurtng, just feeling real heavy & uncomfortable. I don't know what to do. This is the most sick I have ever been in my life. I haven't had any diarhea in 24 hours, but I am still dry heaving & am totally exhausted. What could be wrong?    — Lori M. (posted on December 17, 2001)

I don't know what could be wrong, but I think you need to see a professional person, probably at the ER. You may need potassium or electrolytes, but you sure need your fluids - and they can make sure you are not dehydrated. Do not hesitate too long... Good Luck! Margie B

I'm amazed you decided to tough it out this long. Pain is a warning to all of us to get things checked out. What the previous poster said about the Potassium might indeed be the case. I've had many bouts of low potassium and that CAN bring on a heartattack. If you value your life, I do hope you will go to the emergency room.... "NOW"! Even if it is'nt life threatening (whatever it is), why suffer? The healing process is uncomfortable enough without adding more to it. Good luck.

The same thing happened to me 3 weeks out--I literally thought I was going to die--I thought it was worst than labor pains! It turned out I had a ulcer, I didn't eat a bite for 15 days. Ask your doctor to do a scope and check out your new stomach. Good luck!

Well did this EVER happen to you pre op? I got sick like this after attending a memorial service for my aunt who died. The lady sitting next to me threw up whuile we were eating dinner. I was so afraid it was a surgery complication but my only clue was her illness. I nearly went to the ER. It must of been a bug, but it had me under the weather for a week or so. Now I would go see your PCP for advice. But dont panic, pre op you would of likely called it a bug and not worried about it so much..... Do try to get some nutrition in, you need food to help healing.
