Question:
Is it true that in general, obese people are hot and skinny people are cold?

My best friend is skinny, and she is always cold. I'm obese, and I am always hot. Trust me... you don't wanna be in the car with us when the weather changes... she cranks the heat, which drives me crazy, so I open the window to cool off... this drives her crazy, so she turns the heat up more, and I roll the window down more. People crack up at us when we are in the car together, but trust me... it does get to be an issue when it is overly hot or cold outside. Will this change for me as I lose weight?    — Janet C. I don't know if it is true across the board, but in my instance, when I was big, I was almost always hot and could break into a sweat at the drop of a hat. Now that I am thin, I am almost always very cold. My feet can never stay warm enough nor my hands! Go figure.

I think your right and it was always true for me, perpetually too hot. I used to never wear any coat till the temperature was in the twenties, and even then just a light windbreaker. I HATED dressy clothes, I would sweat just thinking of wearing a tie. Always wore short sleeves for the same reason. Now that I am down 90 pounds I am cold most of the time, while my still MO wife is hot and has the window open. With her surgery scheduled for december 10 she should be chilling out shortly.:) All that fat was a heavy insulator....

All I can say is that I have been freezing continuously for the last 2 months! I don't remember it being this bad last year at this time, and I attribute this to the fact that I had not lost as much weight then as I have now. I just cannot ever get warm. My hands and nose are always cold. But it's a small price to pay to be at a weight that I am happy with!

That is not the rule in my family. My Father, average size was always too hot, wore short sleeved shirts even in winter and didn't own a coat for years. I was like that too when I was younger but now that I am older (51) I am cold all the time and I am still pre-op. My MO sis was always cold too. My other sis, not MO is always too warm. Going to her house can be uncomfortable since she only heats one room in her house. I try to stay in the kitchen, near the stove. Gonna have to cut that out after surgery.

I think it has alot to do with hormones. My husband and I have been married for 12 years. Second marriage for both of us and we are now in our 50's. The first six years we were married every night while we were watching TV he would go get me a blanket, sometime two! You know the route flannel sheets, nightgown etc. Then I had a hysterectomy they took everything and now I can't get cool enough, even though I am on hormones. He turns the furnace down and goes and puts a light jacket or a sweater on. Poor guy. Driving in the car I have known him to zip up his jacket, pull his ear flaps down, put on his gloves and one time he even knocked the poor dog of off her blanket to put on his legs so he didn't have to turn the heat up. I am so lucky to have him. He does everything he can to make me happy.

Before I had surgery I was HOT all the time. Winter, Summer, Fall. Constant sweating, make-up melting off my face, beads of sweat on my forehead, behind my neck. It was one of the most miserable things for me. In the summer I wouldn't even wear make-up to work or out in public because I was embarassed about sweating so profusely. I have lost 131 lbs and find myself freeeeezing ALL the time. I take a jacket with me everywhere I go and bundle up. So, I don't know about most people, but for me, the weight had a lot to do with being hot all the time.

Well...here's my theory. I think whether your cold or hot has to do with your blood sugar. Now bear with me. When you eat a lot of food high in fat and sugar (as many of us do when we are very overweight)...your blood sugar and can rise and fall and tends to make you constantly hot. Many diabetics tend to be very hot until they are on insulin then they are very cold. When your blood sugar goes down, you get very cold. I think this is why we get very cold after surgery. We many still have a "fat layer" that we might expect to keep us warm, but because we aren't eating things high in fat or sugar, our blood sugar tends to be low and thus we tend to get cold. That's my two cents.

Thats how it is in our house. My hubby who is overweight is always hot. When I was thinner (many years ago) I was always cold. When I was overweight I was not always hot but not freeezing either. Now that Im almost at goal I am back to being freezing again. Yes it does make it interesting to drive in the car with me with the heat on and hubby's window open!!!lol

I was never hot natured, but now I am very suceptible to cold and take a jacket everywhere. I also wear long sleeve shirts and pants to bed. I think it does have a lot to do with weight. The more you weigh, the less surface area you have per pound which causes you to cool inefficiently. When you are thinner, you have more surface area per pound and you can cool off a lot easier!
