Question:
When will the nausea and gas stop
I am amost 6 weeks post op and I seem to be having more and more problems with gas pains and nausea. Nothing really seems to help. Is there a specific reason for the nausea? It hits unexpectedly like morning sickness any time day or night. I am going to go back to nothing but soups. — Penny J. (posted on June 19, 2001)

Are you using milk products? Is your gall bladder already out? I know
these seem odd, but give us a little more info. What are you mainly eating?
how much of it?

I agree with everything Michelle said. I am 9 months post op, and I still
get terrible gas every time I eat dairy products, including milk, cheese,
and yogurt. Last night for example, I tried some plain yogurt with fresh
fruit added, and voila: gas galore all night long. Nausea comes from whem I
eat too much or too fast. If I haven't chewed something well enough,
especially meat/chicken or bread, it gets clogged in the pouch and blocks
other food. Therefore, I vomit. Same result if I eat too much too fast,
even liquids like water or soup. Also, foods too fatty or too sugary will
affect me the same way--nausea and a queasy, sick feeling. These things
were also true in the early days after surgery too. Good luck to you.

Oh My Goodness.... I treated myself to some sugar free/ fat free ice cream
last night...and I was not very lady like the rest of the night....it was
AWFUL....thank goodness my hubby has a sense of humor! I can only assume
it was the dairy...although I LOVE dairy and can't bring myself to give it
up.

Sounds like dairy. Haven't had surgery yet, but recently diagnosed lactose
intolerant....lots of gas, nausea and cramps with eating milk
products.....if I stick to small amounts of "white cheeses" I can
have a little of those without side effects....have found that Bluebell
Dutch Chocolate Ice Cream doesn't effect me at all...a tsp of any other
type and I pay the price!

Strangley, you can eat chocolate ice cream because chocolate has an enzyme
that helps milk be digested easier. My DH can only drink chocolate milk
easily, made w/ hersheys syrup. Don't make chocolate a habit, of course,
and there is a reduced sugar Hershey's, but its better than getting a
chocolate fix from a candy bar. You can try Lactaid tablets/ drops, or if
you have a Trader Joes their version costs about half the name brand.

MA you have solved a mystery of mine since I was a little kid:)
Chocolate helps digest milk. When I was little chocolate milk went down
fine but white milk made me ill. Amazing, I never understood this.
I am pre op and really enjoy milk products, it will be terrible if I am
lactose intoleran!
Hey you can add Splenda to that low sugar hershey syrup.

Hi! I am pre-op, but my surgeon and nutritionist require 32 oz of milk a
day post op---YUK!! Before you freak out, you can mix it in with oatmeal,
cream of wheat, etc. Of course it is skim milk. I am lactose
intolerant--which I try to "forget" cause I love dairy products,
except plain milk. ANYWAY--I went to a pre-op class today and they said we
could add sugar-free Nestle's Quik to help the milk go down. And if you
use Lactaid or their milk products, you won't have as much of a problem
with the gas, etc. Oh, yeah, according to our nutritionist, RNY bypass can
make you temporarily lactose intolerant---what it does to those of us
already intolerant??? I know this doesn't really answer the question
originally asked, but I saw all the milk issues and decided to chip in!!
