Question:
Anyone with BCBS/Highmark please read
I am new to my company (was a temp for months just got made perm) benefits package. The insurer is Blue Cross Blue Shield managed my Highmark in Pennsylvania (I am in Oregon). I haven't been able to get a decent explanation about what this means.. it's a PPO. Is there anyone out there with the same coverage who's been researching WLS? Thanks for your help. — Joscelin (posted on June 16, 2001)

I have Highmark BCBS. They cover WLS as long as you are 100 pounds
overweight. The process was fairly easy for me. It didn't even need to go
for medical review. I was concerned because they told me that I wouldn't
get a letter but they said that that is their policy. Call them with your
group # and ask if WLS is covered, then ask if the surgeon you're working
with is in their provider list. If he/she is a preferred provider,
coverage is at 100%. If not, I think there is a small deductible. Also
check your own company HR benefits manual. Mine had a clause about WLS
that was a little more restrictive than the BCBS qualifications (I still
met the criteria for both my comp and BCBS though). Good luck!
