Question:
what exactly do they consider to be a co-morbidity? trying to get approved!!

I am border line over 100 lbs depending on which table i'm using. I'm a little confused over what they consider co-morbidity to be. I don't have a heart problem just pain, swelling, and fatigue because of my weight. Do you think this and documents of past prescritions taken will be enough to get me approved. And does anyone know of a site of a sample letter? thanks    — nancy M. (posted on March 4, 2000)

Hi Nancy- Co-morbidities are problems that usually go "along" with being overweight. In my case, what was considered was: high blood pressure (I took two different medicines), hyperchol- esterolemia, strong family history of diabetes, hypertension, diabetes and stroke. When I applied, I listed every single diet I had every tried, plus ALL the family health problems that existed or we (my physician and me)thought existed (both my parents were deceased, so we went on what I could remember). We were very careful to be as exact as possible, and I guess we did okay, because though it took six weeks, I was approved the very first time. Good luck in your attempt. Judy

Hey Nancy: I had about the exact BMI you have and was approved the first try. My biggest comorbidity was arthritis. It was already quite bad. I also have diabetes in the family, and borderline high cholosteral. I also gave a detailed list of all diets, meds, etc. I have taken over the years. My PCP also believed in my need for the surgery so that was very helpful. I hope this helps. Good luck. LAP RNY 9/22/99--70lbs lost!!
