Question:
Have you experienced gout post-op?

I am wondering if I am the only one who had an attack of gout after wls. I was six weeks post-op and had a severe gout attack in my big toe. I have no history of gout and this was my first attack. The Dr. says it was brought on by the changes in my body. Do any of you know what you can take post-op for this condition? thanks, Deanna    — devine299 (posted on December 25, 1999)

No Deanna, I'm having all my gout now -- post op and am doing a ton of research. My doctor, unfortunatly, has never heard *rolls eyes* of gout being a post-op side effect so I'm looking it all up from scratch. I've also noticed that following the gout (within the next week) I'm getting UTI symptoms -- painful -- and the usual medications are not helping for that. I'm wondering if their is a connection and am looking into that as well. Any information you have since you posted this question would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I hope the gout has eased up for you. ~deniseTx

I had my Lap proximal RNY done 10/25/99. At my 3 month check the doctor asked me if I had any joint aches. I said that I hadn't. He told me my blood work showed a touch of gout. He said that it isn't that uncommon to have this after surgery. I was told that if I did develop any pain to give him a call and he would prescribe something for me. I did not have any problems, my lab work cleared (as he said it would) and I haven't had any problems since.

7/13/02 I am suffering from the gout. I am four weeks post-op, the gout has hit my hands. Especially my left hand, which I write with. My doctors don't know why it has start. It is nice to know that there are other people that have the same problem.

Anyone who wants to discuss this issue with me in detail, I'd be happy to talk to you. EMAIL: [email protected]. Be sure you put "gout" in the subject field. Long story short. I got gout when I was 20 for the first time. I've had it off and on since then and I am now 45. I can tell you everything you ever want to know about gout. LOL. I had the GBP in 10/03 and had SERIOUS post surgery issues with gout and my gout was never like this before. I'm pleased as I can be with the actual GBP surgery (3 months out with 75 pds gone) BUT I'd take all my fat back in a second to have made the last 3 months of pain and misery go away. I'd never recomend anyone who's had gout to have the surgery.

I also had gout after surgery. It was honestly the worst pain in my life, I had attacks in both my hips, shoulders, knees, and all my fingers. My doc told me that people who have gout attacks after surgery had it before surgery, but it was so mild that it probably wasn't noticed. The stress on the body after surgery can create a full blown attack.

Eat cherries. Does not matter in what form. Fresh, canned, frozen, liquid juice from cherries. Something in them breaks down the stuff that is forming in the joints and causing the pain. My father suffered horribly after a double hip replacement. Other people told me to get him some cherries and it worked. I keep him well stocked in dried cherries I find at an all natural store.
