Question:
I have is there any way to get secondary insurance to pay if they cover and primary
My husband has blue cross of Ca. I have Blue cross of Or. My insurance has denied it, My husbands insurance, my secondary insurance (blue cross of Ca. ) Has been paying for this surgery (they just paid for my Husbands) Is there any way I can get them to pay for mine. They said that as the secondary they do not have to review my Dr. preauthorization request. Anyone know the answer? What should I do. — Penny H. (posted on September 24, 1999)

I bill medical insurance for a living.I believe that if your primary
carrier has a specific exclusion to this procedure, and if it's a benefit
with your secondary then they should consider it. You will definitely need
to provide the secondary with a copy of your primary carriers denial. Good
luck to you!!

That is what I did. My primary would not cover the surgery because it was
out of network, so I submitted the request to my secondary and got
approval. Even though I have a written letter approving from the secondary,
they have yet to pay (6 months)because they say they won't pay until they
get copies of the denial of the primary. Even though I was
"pre-approved" by the secondary, it appears that I should have
listed my primary with the hospital etc so they would bill the primary
first and then get the denial and bill the secondary. It's all very
confusing!
