Question:
What about cpap machines and prescribed meds

I am using a cpap machine and I am wondering if I will have to take mine to the hospital with me or will i use one from the hospital. and also do I have to take my prescribed meds with me to the hospital. I'm a little over a month away from my surgery date and want to have everything taken care of before then.    — fngrs132 (posted on May 22, 2005)

My doctor told me to bring my CPAP machine to the hospital although I was never able to use it as engineering would not certify that it was safe to use. As far as prescribed medication, I don't know but my guess would be that they would not want you to bring medication to the hospital. As always...these are great questions for your doctor. Make it point to call your surgeon's office every week with questions, this way they know you are engaged and you never know what you will bubble to the top--possibly something your doctor didn't mention!!! Good Luck!

I had my surgery this past Monday (5/16), and I was instructed to bring my CPAP, but not my meds. However, the docs needed to know what meds I was on and the dosage amount, so a list of what you take would be a good idea. I actually ended up using the CPAP for the one night I was there, and respiratory therapy checked several times to see if the oxygen was connected to it (which it wasn't). When I was discharged, my meds were reduced from 5 to only 1. WOOHOO!!

Several days before I was scheduled to have surgery. I had to meet with the charge nurse at the hospital. She went over all of my medications, and medical history. She told me to bring my C-PAP machine, and a list of my medications. When I was in the hospital for the surgery. I never had to use my c-pap machine. I had it there just in case I needed to use it. Good Luck

u need to ask your doctor, some hospital will not allow your mach, some will prefer it, they may want to screen it for random radio emmisions so as to be sure it doent interfer with thier telemetry, ive had it both ways , i do intend to take my mask, and for this procdure, the hosp ask for the precription for the titer on the bipap settings. while your talking to ur doctor , ask about a ds, it is more gerd friendly then the rny, even a choice for curring the gerd.

You will probably take your own. I have not heard of a hospital suppying a cpap. Besides your machine has the numbers set for you alone with the computer card in it. Also, these are questions that your doctor's office needs to answer including the meds.

Ay my hospital we encourage our patients to bring their own cpap machine becasue you are used to the mask and all. As far as your meds are concerned you could take them but the hospital will have the pharmacy bring your meds, if they find that you take med that can not be converted to something that is on the formulary then they will check your med and allow you to take that. hope this helps!!oc tn

I don't have a CPAP machine so have no input regarding that. However, I had surgery in Chicago and was told by my surgeon to bring all prescription medication with me to the hospital. I did and my surgeon, the anesthesiologist and I discussed what they wanted me to take the morning of the procedure. The remaining two days I took my medication as usual, from my own suitcase. Maybe it partly depends on what you take, I don't really know. I made sure my surgeon actually SAW the pills because I was afraid of swallowing something too big. No problems though. Ask your surgeons office. Good luck to you!

Hi Monica, When I had surgery, patients were told to bring their cpap machine. As far as meds go, the only meds that I was told to bring was my birth control pills but each facility is different and you will probably be informed on what to bring.

Hi, I had my surgery on 4/12/05. I used the hospital c-pap. I ordered all my meds before I went for surgery and guess what--I haven't taken any of the 12 meds/per day since the day before surgery. So I really didn't need to order them at all. I have perfect blood sugare & blood pressure since my surgery. I was told NOT to bring meds to the hospital, that IF I needed them--the hospital would supply. Good luck and welcome to a new life! Jan

I feel you should give your surgeon's receptionist a call or the hospital where you are having the procedure as both will probably be aware of your surgeon's protocol in these matters. Hey the good news is it wont be too long before you don't need your cpap machine. In my experience after the first 30 pounds or so, it makes a great impact on your need for this machine. Good luck and keep us all informed
