Question:
I am so scared! I wake up in the middle of the night choking on

medication that I had taken two days ago. This is the second time this has happened and I thought it was my calcium pills because they were so large and did not desolve but this time it happened with Alieve. I can taste the medication and there is a very painful burning sensation in my chest. I don't know what to do because I do not want to go through the pain and terror. It seems the pills are stuck at the top of my throat but I have no sign of a problem until I wake up choking and gasping for air in while I am sleeping. Does anyone have this problem?    — Stephanie S. (posted on November 21, 2004)

DEAR STEPHANIE, IT DOES SOUND SCARY TO ME TOO. I HAD A PILL STUCK AND THE NURSE TOLD ME TO EAT SOME SUGAR FREE PUDDING AND IT SHOULD PUSH THE PILL DOWN. I TRIED IT AND IT WORKED. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT YOU EITHER DISOLVE THE PILL IN LIQUID, USE LIQUID VITAMINS AND DON'T TAKE ANYTHING HOURS BEFORE BEDTIME. GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS, LORIANN http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ChristianWLSJourney/

First of all what are you doing taking Aleve. That is at the top of the list of medications that we are NOT suppose to take post op. It can cause an ulcer, can burn a hole in your pouch that can cause a leak. I agree with the other post I usually drink alot of water or eat some yogurt after pills so that they move on through the pouch. Nancy

You aren't supposed to be taking Alieve! It can cause ulsers if the pill doesn't properly disolve!

I am not a medical expert, but I think that it is physically impossible to be choking on medication that you took two days prior. It would have past out of your stomach pouch already because of the natural digestion process. No more Aleve, no products with aspirin unless your WLS surgeon oks them. Secondly, it sounds like anxiety to me. If it is not then take your meds with more water. Christine

not an answer to your post precisly; but 1) UpCalD, is a great calcium citrate product - its an unflavored powder you can add to any liquids, like cyrstal light or oatmeal You can order off the internet or Vitalday. Also Solary brand in the wafer isnt bad tasting for calcium both beat your 'horse pills'... also, since in your profile you mentioned not getting any after care; you might like to click on http://www smallscar.com/Obesity_Surgery/Gastric_Bypass_Book/gastric_bypass_book.html ( put the http with the address) this is a complete book that is given by another group; it tells all from start to finish; and gives you a list of medications we should avoid. Hope it helps.

I'm not a Doctor are you sure you are choking on meds. I would talk to your Doctor, but to me it sounds like it could be (Sleep Apena). I did that for years (choking). Then my doctor sent me for a sleep study. And now I sleep with a C PAP. No more choking. Maybe something to look into. Cheryl

You aren't choking on meds from 2 days ago, you are probably experiencing some sort of gastric or bile reflux. I have both and take a liqid med for the bile reflux. To check this for yourself, don't take any vites and only the prescriptions you MUST take and take them at least 8 hours before you go to bed. Drink lots of water from 3 pm on. Do this for 3 days and see what happens. If this still happens when you are horizontal in bed, it's probably reflux. Bile reflux is so painful and feels like a poision gas is creeping up your esophagus and into your throat and sinuses. There is nothing you can take to stop it like water or food. If this is your experience, email me privately and I'll tell you what I've done for the situation.

Tylenol products are what wls patients are suppose to be able to take only. Not aleve. It causes ulcers cause it has aspirin in it. Your problem sounds like acid reflux from the time released aleve with the aspirin in it.

Hi Stephanie, Your Dr should be able to answer this for you , it could be one of many things or something very simple.. It has nothing to do with it being Aleve. Although some surgeons don't recommend taking them but not all. Hope you are feeling better soon. MaryLyn
