Question:
I'm 9 mo. out from surgery and now it hurts when I drink water - why?
When I first had surgery I had trouble drinking water. My doctor said it was normal and it would get better as time went on -- he was right. But now, 9 months later, it's starting to hurt when I drink water. Food goes down OK, but hurts when I drink water, also burb a lot. Anyone had this happen or have any clues what's going on? I'm wondering about an ulser? — Gail L. (posted on June 20, 2004)

How does water taste? Have you been scoped? Any nausea after eating or back
pain?

This is what happened to me when I found I had an ulcer. Water hurt, tasted
odd..almost like metal. It was fine before going down, but all of a
sudden..I could no longer drink it. I ignored it, thinking it was just an
odd fluke. It got worse, started hurting in my back and soon I was in major
pain.I thought it was gallbladder, it was an ulcer. I was 9 months out at
the time, almost 10 months.
You may want to get it checked, just in case. Better safe than sorry,
right? ;)Mine is much better now, but I'm very much aware of everything I
eat now.
Good luck to you :)

Gail...sometimes I hurt when I drink something too. I can't drink ice
water or even water that's very cold. But I've always been that way...I
need to drink just tap water to keep from having my abdomen hurt. I do
have episodes of what I call half burps and half hiccups. It happens
without warning while I'm trying to eat. Usually, I stop eating at that
point because I think I may be getting too full. Sometimes, I don't feel
full or uncomfortable and the very next bite is the one that sends me right
over the edge and makes me feel sick. I don't know if you're trying to
drink during eating or not, but I don't drink for 30 minutes prior to and
30 minutes after eating per my doctors instructions. The couple of times I
was eating and the food wouldn't go down because my mouth was really dry
from some meds I have to take, the fluid caused me IMMEDIATE discomfort to
the point I had to stop eating and lay down until it passed in about 20-30
minutes. Hope this helps...good luck and God bless.
