Question:
Is broccoli OK post-op????

I am 7 weeks post-op and on a regular diet. Just wondering if (cooked) broccoli is okay? When I was on soft foods they had it listed as one to stay away from, but now that I am on regular I ASSUME it's okay, but thought I would ask before I eat!!! I am doing great so far with nothing bothering me, but I do watch and read what I eat. Thanks!!    — Cheryl D. (posted on January 10, 2004)

I would do whatever your doc says but I think it is probably one of those foods that some people have trouble with for a while, I have ate cooked broccoli just recently with no problems. Everyone is different though. Open RNY 9/25/03 -77 lbs

Raw gave me gas. I dont' like al dente, you know, bright green & crunchy? It sits like a wet, heavy sponge in there, thunk. I prefer it cooked past bright green to a soft yellowy greeny? Hope you know what I mean. Then it's soft and very manageable.

I was told cooked broccoli (non-crunchy) was okay as of about 2 mos. out, but to hold off eating raw broccoli (in salads) until I was 6 months out.

I was eating steamed broccoli around 6 weeks post-op, more on the mushy side and the further out, the more crunchy. As with any new food, go ahead and try a small amount of it. If the pouch doesn't like it, it will let you know! I never had a problem with it...

I eat broccoli that is very well steamed all the time. If it's crunchy at all, I steam it a little longer. Also, I eat mostly just the top "tree" part of each piece and avoid the tough stem.

Everytime I eat broccoli I get severe gas pains. Cooked or raw it does not matter. I am 10 months post op and it just is not worth it to me to eat the broccoli because I will be miserable for two days afterwards. Best of luck to you.

I eat it steamed, I make broccoli soup, and I eat it raw with ranch dressing. Love it & no problems. Just the same as preop, Only smaller portions.
