Question:
I need help with high protein 'meal' ideas

I am almost 4 months post-op, down approx. 90 pounds. I do not experience hunger, and am having a hard time finding foods to eat. I eat cheese, yogurt, turkey, chicken (sometimes), but rarely desire to eat. I know I need to eat in order to get the 50 grams of protein, but wanted input regarding easy, quick things to eat. I have a difficult time tolerating protein shakes. Any ideas? Thanks!!!    — Melissa H. (posted on November 5, 2003)

Try eggs (scrambled or boiled work well for me). Seafood of any sort has always gone down well for me. The texture of shrimp, scallops and white fish fillets is tender and easy to digest, and has lots of protein. I also like beans of any sort (much lower in fat than meats and cheeses). Try refried beans, red beans and rice (without the rice), thick bean soup, mixed bean salad, chili.

Like Vespa, I use eggs a lot, though I use egg beaters 'cause I'm lazy. ;-) I also like string cheese and turkey pepperoni (nuked or plain) as snacks, for a quick protein boost.

Though sometimes controversial, cottage cheese has one of the highest counts of protein per volume. It is available in nonfat forms. For instance, 1/2 cup will provide 14g of protein. That's quite a jolt. Something I did all Summer was to cut up a few tomato and cucumber slices into the cottage cheese and add maybe 1/2-oz tuna, with a topping of 1 tsp fat-free thousand island dressing, and that's an awesome protein lunch. Lowfat string cheese w/ a couple of Healthy Choice slices of turkey around it is another protein boost w/ about 100 calories and 10g of protein. Just a couple of ideas. Good luck.

I agree with the others. I use cottage cheese, love beans. Before surgery I was not a bean person, but now I love them. I love pinto beans and refried. I also have made chili with very lean hamburger meat and lots of beans. I also have a protein powder I got from Vitamin World. It is a whey powder and has no taste. You can add it to your mashed potatoes or cottage cheese and no taste. Hope this helps. I also use sugar free carnation instant breakfast in some skim milk. Hope this helps

Wow, I wish I could be more like you!! LOL tomorrow I will be 3 months post op and I've only lost 55 lbs. I'm going crazy because I feel like I'm ALWAYS hungry. I haven't lost a lb. in a few weeks, and so now I'm trying to push myself to get more water in and exercise more. I don't think I'm eating more than I should at all, and it is all protein, but I'm losing VERY slowly. *sigh* Oh well!

IsoPure Zero Carb drinks, 40 grams of protein 20 oz. of liquid, many flavors. Like a thicker KoolAid, I put it in the fridge, then add it to some ice in a big cup, most of my protein is done. It's nearly impossible to eat my 62-66 grams of protein a day in food. <p>For breakfast, I cook up some Bocca Burger Sausage Links (less fat than reg. sausage and hardly a difference, really), saute a few mushroom slices, with a few green onion pieces, when mushrooms are almost done, throw in the sausage to warm it up, then add and egg beater 1/4 cup = 1 egg, then a half a slice of swiss cheese or some cheddar cheese. It's oh so yummy! I slice up the mushroom and onions and put them into a container so that they are easy to throw into the pan. There are 5 sausages in a package (2 packages to a box), I just cook up one package, refridge. the others, use one sausage sliced each day. I figure it's about 20 grams of protein for breakfast. Yummy! Just a thought! Good luck!

I like Jack's Links Tender Steak Bites (jerky)...1oz has 70 cal and 10g prot. I also make 'extra' when we grill....chicken, steak, sirloin burger, sausages, etc and refreeze them in serving sizes to microwave as a quick meal.

Hate protein drinks myself and just don't do them :>) Things I eat for protein are: Canned corned beef (very tender and prechopped) steamed with a bit of shredded cabbage - very low carb too! dark meat chicken (have only been able to eat white meat after about 8 months postop) sauted and then steamed with broccoli and topped with Alfredo sauce from a jar. Quick, cheap and low-carb. Moz cheese sticks - have eaten over a 1000 of these since surgery (yup, got bored and tallied it up one day lol). Beef jerky and steak bites. Steak cut by the butcher into thin fajita strips and stir-fried with fajita seasoning, topped with shredded cheese and a bit of sour cream (or IMO) and salsa. Hope this helps!

I love soup! I make sure that they are low in salt Heathly Vally). For example: They have a great Lentil soup which is high in protein and fiber, add FF Cheese, diced meat, powder milk (thickens up the soup), diced onion, green peppers, and you have lots of protein, fiber, carbs. It's hot for the cold nights and it's liquid so I don't have to wait as long to start drinking my water after I eat. I chop everything in my little chopper (even the soup) so there is not real chewing. Atkins has a GREAT Breadfast bar which has 11 grams of protein (APPLE CRISP). I found a great receipe for pancakes. OATMEAL PANCAKES (makes 1 serving, about 4 pancakes) 288 cal, 28 g protein, 32 g carbs, 4 g fat 1/2 c old-fashioned oatmeal (can use what you have) 1/4 c. low-fat cottage cheese or tofu 4 egg whites (they sell in the store near egg beaters) 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 tsp groung cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg Low - sugar syrup ( for us sugar free) Blend everything in a blender until smooth and pour onto a hot nonstick skillet. I can only eat 2 so I save the the other two for the next day. You may want to add almonds to your diet also. Look at the South Beach Diet book or Low Carb books for recipes.

I love fish now! Hated it, unless it was deep fried before surgery!! I take a frozen (or thawed if I think of it in time) whiting, pollock, tapila(sp??) throw it in a skillet w/some pam (free everything) add some garlic, lemon pepper, parsley flakes, and let it cook in the skillet til it is done! REALLY high in protein and a great change from baked fish. My whole family of "fried" eaters LOVES this fish, we have it 2-3 times a week usually! I cant do chicken or beef yet, well, I can but it revisits me, and I am sick of gettin sick! Also steak-ums are low in everything and high in protein. For my protein drink I use "esa whey protein" chocolate is my fav, add a couple tbsp sugar free pudding, 4-6 oz skim milk, blend in blender, and then add ice (usually prechopped to save on blender blades) and make a milkshake type treat. It is delic, dont taste the protein, and it is a really thick, icecream like snack that fills me up when I have head hunger. My 12 yr old son always comes running when he hears the blender, and asks if he can have a shake too, so you KNOW it is goood stuff! I have tried vanilla protein also, with banana s/f pudding, but isnt quite as good to me, but a nice change once in a while. Hope this helps! Leslie N. 364/302 Lap RNY 9/3/03

I forgot this one!! I also make a batch of chilli once every couple of weeks. Chilli beans(pre mixed of course), I use ground turkey because I cant tolerate the beef, chilli powder to taste, can of tomatoes or sause, can of water. Cook it an hour or so, and I have 8oz glad ware (or take alongs) that I fill 6oz full, 1/2 liquid, 1/2 meat/beans, and freeze them. Makes about 5-6 bowls up, plus the bowl I eat that night for supper, and I have a ready made lunch or dinner takes a minute or 2 to heat in the mic, throw some l/f cheez on it and YUMMY! I use that for lunch at work, or when the guys want some meat & taters that I dont want to indulge in. Also the "soup at hand" makes some delicious new cream blends, broccoli & cheese, clam chowder, cream chicken...and they are pretty high in protein and very fast & easy to make like a minute in the mic and they taste great. Shake them up B4 you open them though!! I wont embarrass myself with that story!! Heheheh!! GOOD LUCK, you are doing GREAT!!! Leslie
