Question:
Irregular Period
I am almost 3 months post-op, and I just recently started the Nuva Ring birth control 3 weeks ago. The doctors orders were to insert the ring at the start of my period. I followed the directions, but my period has not stopped yet. I've never had my period last more that a week, so going on 3 weeks has me worried. Does this sound like something that is normal for a post-op to have irregular periods, or could it be a negative effect of the birth control? If anyone has any answers or comments, please let me know. Thanks. — enoandemily (posted on September 28, 2003)

Emily, this has been an ongoing problem for me too. I have recently
started Yasmin for birth control and I had a 3 week period the first month,
and the second month I started a week early while on the regular pills. I
think it's normal for us. I have another post op friend that was on teh
depo shot but still bled the entire first year post op.

99% chance it's the hormonal changes going on and it likely has nothing to
do with having WLS. Probably would have happened even pre-op. It is
normal to take a year or more for the bleeding to toally stop on Depo. For
me it was 15 months, but it does get less and less as time goes on. I
still love Depo and would not change inless it was killing me in some way.
<p>The ring might have too high a level of estrogen for your body.
When the doc decided to mess around with BCP's on me, prior to the Depo, I
spent 9 months of solid heavy bleeding. It would appear the last thing my
body needed was more estrogen. Once I went to the shots, it loved the Depo
and stopped the bleeding immediately for 6 weeks and even after that it was
never as heavy again and now has been gone since 1996. The more fat we
have on our bodies the more estrogen it produces. In my case I evidently
had way too much unopposed estrogen and once it had the progesterone coming
it was so happy.
