Irregular Period

I am almost 3 months post-op, and I just recently started the Nuva Ring birth control 3 weeks ago. The doctors orders were to insert the ring at the start of my period. I followed the directions, but my period has not stopped yet. I've never had my period last more that a week, so going on 3 weeks has me worried. Does this sound like something that is normal for a post-op to have irregular periods, or could it be a negative effect of the birth control? If anyone has any answers or comments, please let me know. Thanks.
