Question:
I have looked in the library, but got very confused, so here it is.
I have a tender bulge just to the right of my incision, and will be going to my PCP today to check if it's a hernia. I am 7 1/2 months out and -98 pounds. I have heard that often when you have a hernia repair they will do a tummy tuck at the same time. Is this true? Also, I have a friend that had both procedures one 3 years ago, and she said she would NOT do it again becaise the TT left a horrible scar, and the pain was much worse then open RNY. Can anyone help me out here? Thanks. — Lesa H. (posted on May 20, 2003)

Our support group had a lecture from a plastic surgeon last night complete
with slide show and pics. There is no way around the horrible scar for a
TT. It goes from hip to hip and sometimes it goes up to your breast bone,
so that it is shaped like a T, or even all the way around your backside if
you are having a body lift. Good thing is that a good surgeon will place
it so that your underwear or bathing suit will cover it. I've also heard
the pain is much worse than the RNY if muscle work is also needed with the
TT. And yes, often times if you have a hernia its easier to convince
insurance to pay for a tuck, or if insurance will only pay for the hernia,
it would certainly cut your out of pocket costs down as the
anesthesiologist, operating room etc are already paid for.
