Question:
I work at the Outback

Hey all. I'll make this short. I am almost 2 years post op. I have happily maintained my weight of 153-157 pounds. I am a server at the outback and work there 6 nights a week. I find myself muching all night long when I am working!! There is a McDonalds right next door and sometimes, I order a double cheesburger before work, and I can eat the whole thing (although I do eat it and drink water at the same time). Currently, i am in a financial bind and can't afford to eat at the outback (which makes the McDonalds 99 cents menu convenient for me)when I am working every night. Not even a joey sirloin (a 6 oz. sirloin with a side). I am petrified that I will start gaining weight. I feel like I am carb filling with bread and mashed potatoes most nights(cause we don't have to pay for them). In the last week, I have gained up to 159 pounds. Anyone have any suggestions for some REALLY CHEAP high protein food items that I can bring to work and eat for dinner that will help up my protein intake yet stop me from grazing all night long? Any suggestions? Thanks    — enjo4 (posted on October 1, 2002)

Here are some of the things I take to work........individual cottage cheese, yogurt, string cheese, Lean Cuisine or WW meal, protein bar, and rolled up slices of lunchmeat.

Hi, I am almost a year out, just a few days shy. I have los down to 148, or there about, That is a total of somewhere between 120-130 lbs. I work also, for my breaks and lunches, I take a protein drink somtimes, and then I buy cheese and cut it up into squares(this is cheaper than string cheese)I make PB and Jelly sandwhiches (polaner all fruit) I also take beef jerky. Take some of your left overs from your meal the previous day..... Good luck and god bless.

Probably your best bet would be protein bars. They are portable and you can find inexpensive ones. I have some of the ones I use listed on my profile. I also keep a can of nuts and a jar of peanut butter in my desk. If I eat some of either one of those I find it impossible to eat anything else because they tend to really stick with me and make me feel full. I also eat a lot of cheese. Wasa makes some good flatbread crackers that are pretty low carb and whole grain to boot. Good luck!

If you're running over to McDonald's, why buy a double cheeseburger when you could buy one of their salads: Chef's salad (17 grams protein, 5 grams carbs) or a Grilled Chicken Caesar salad (7 grams protein, 3 grams carbs)? The double cheeseburger has mega calories, fat grams, carbs, etc. They do have a Chicken McGrill sandwich which isn't too bad for you (without mayo). What about stopping by Wendy's before you go to work? They have chili on their .99 cents menu which keeps well. I buy a bag of monterey jack cheese that comes with individually wrapped 0.75 oz. pieces. Sometimes I eat 1 or 2 for my breakfast. Not too expensive and it is protein. Beef jerky is good protein. There are so many things we can come up with that aren't too expensive. :o)

I can see buying a double cheese for 99 cents vs. a salad for almost $3 when you're broke...plus it saves time and no mess. I try to keep clear of that now, but money is not an issue..is there a Wendy's near? The chili is so good and it's only 99 cents too, plus they have those chicken nuggets and once in a while isn't so bad...otherwise I eat those 3oz packs of Tuna, cheese sticks, boiled eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt...I like Tuna and Cottage cheese the best as they feel me up and have tons of protein...I just got 25 grams out of 3.5 oz of food! WOO HOO!

Hey, Erin! How about canned tuna fish or canned chicken? I keep deli meat (wal-mart special), shredded cheese (wal-mart big mixed bag), and salad fixings (spinach or lettuce) in my fridge at work and make a salad many days. Protein bars work well but, in my opinion, all the good tasting ones are expensive! Peanut butter is another good option. Boiled eggs, make at home quiches (egg, cheese, bacon). Best wishes, and I know how you feel about being petrified of gaining! Take care,
