Question:
is the 1st. consultation w/ surgeon always so fast?
I had my first consult today with Dr. Overcash and he weighed me and took me in the room asked me what kind of surgery I wanted and he explained more risks then good about the surgery and told me he wouldnt even want me to have the surgery but diets dont work and if i keep getting heavier I could be dead at 60 he did scare me alittle but i said I was still interested in the surgery is that what they all do at the 1st. appt? Then he gave me a packet to fill out and Patrice told me when I have all the info, together send it in the mail to her after I have my physc. evaluation,IS that what they do wait until everything is together and dont take any of your info. the fist time? I was running all over getting all this stuff together when I really didnt have to today.I guess. If you could let me know how it went for u I would appreciate it ..thank you They were all very nice I just am a little confused as to how it works.... — Kelliann S. (posted on September 20, 2002)

Kelliann, I am 12 weeks post op RNY with Dr. O. He's pretty to the point
about the whole thing...I had 3 pages of questions when I went for my
first appointment, and he answered most of them before I could ask...with
his detailed explanations. As far as all the info needed, I had everything
they asked me for except the letter from my primary care doctor. (I had a
brand new doc since my old doc had just left his practice 2 months before).
It turned out I didn't even need a letter from primary care, or a pysch
eval. It all depends on your insurance's own requirements. I was very
lucky in that I was actually approved at my initial eval. Patrice was able
to get approval over the phone while I was there...again, it depends on
insurance. I have been very satisfied with Dr. Overcash and his staff!
And I have absolutely no regrets about this surgery! -55# since 6-20-02.
PS...I faxed back the patient info packet to save time as well, if that is
an option for you.

I think it all depends. Before I was even allowed to see my surgeon, we had
to attend a large seminar-type support group meeting where we were informed
about the surgery by the head RN and met some of the surgeons, etc. There
are 5 surgeons at the Obesity Clinic I had my surgery with. Mine didn't
seem rushed, I had my packet filled out when I got to my first
consultation. He explained the surgery to me, and I asked him every single
question I had. My parents were with me (I am 22 yrs old). Next appointment
you should ask questions, or express your concern. I'm sure it will be a
longer, more thorough appointment next time! :) goodluck!
