Question:
When can I safely mow the lawn??
I am 9 weeks post-op Lap RNY (down 40 pounds! Woo-hoo!) and I share the lawnmowing duties with my wonderful roommate. I don't want to hurt myself by mowing if it's too early. Could I safely mow my relatively small yard without too much danger?? — LaRayne H. (posted on May 15, 2002)

I think you need to ask your Doctor that one, but I am 12 days Post Op RNY
Lap, and mowed the lawn yesterday with no problem,
Every body is different, but I bet your Doctor says no problem.Plus what
great exercise
Good Luck

Better to check with your doctor. I am 6 wks post-op and I don't mow the
lawn yet. I can't lift anything over 20 lbs for another week or so. Also,
I think it depends on the type of lawn you have and lawnmower too. A nice
small flat lawn without having to keep moving the mower back and forth
might be ok but you should check with your doctor to make sure. I still
can't do sit-ups either and moving a mower back and forth uses the same
muscles. By the way, congratulations on your 40 lb loss!! Whoaaaa!

I am 10 weeks post op and have been mowing my yard for the last 4 weeks or
so. It doesn't hurt me at all and I enjoy getting the exercise. I have a
push mower, not self-propelled, so it is pretty hard work. I agree with
the others, however...as your doctor and be sure it's ok.

I had an open RNY last July. I had to be off work for 6 weeks then I was
released back to full duty. Im a nurse and that includes lifting patients,
etc. My doctor said that in 6 weeks most of the muscles cut have
sufficient time to heal. I would think you need even less time for a lap.
RNY. If you're really not sure, call the doctor or his or her nurse. They
can tell you. Best of luck to you!!
