Question:
Exercise balance--How much Cardio and Weight toning should you do?

I am currently working out 5 days a week. I do the ecliptic rider with the movable arms 3 days a week for 20-30min. I do the ecliptic rider without arms on Tuesdays for 45 min then I do a step class in the evenings that has floor exercises with little resistance. How long before I start to add weights? I ask this is because I don't want my fat to start looking bigger over larger muscles--I want to tone but just enough to shape the body.    — Bridgett H. (posted on May 7, 2002)

I started lifting weights at 10 weeks. I started using very light weights(5&8 lbs) I also did an aerobic workout for 45 min per day. I mix up the treadmill, elliptical, bike and stairmaster. Plus I am always changing my order of exercises. When I can comfortably do 3 sets of 12-15 reps I add weight. I am now at 17 weeks and can really tell a difference in my size I have steadily lost weight while I hear of others who are stuck.Let me know how you are doing. One added benefit going to the gym people have noticed my weight loss so I get complimented(boost the ego). The exercise physiologist has helped me with technique and weight lifting so I will not get hurt. Good Luck

I am currently at 13 wks and I have lost 53.5 pounds doing what I have been doing. I started at 278. One of the fitness couselors at the gym asked me about my regimen that I do and he stated that I am doing too much cardio/aerobic. I also do a step class with weights and resistance training for 1 hour 2days a week.
