Question:
Open incision after staples are removed
Has anyone had a problem with their incision being open after the staples were removed. My staples came out today and there is about a 1-2 inch section that seperated a bit but is not very deep. How have others dealt with this problem and how long does it take to fully close up. My doctor said not to worry about this but it just makes me nervous that the incision is not fully closed. Guess I should not complain though, down 10 lbs 9 days post op. — Heather P. (posted on December 8, 2000)

Yes, I had the same problem. Kept it covered and applied Neosporin during
the day and at night I uncovered it when I was not moving around. I cleaned
it with saline and it healed in a week or so. Just do not pick at it when
it scabs. It will be fine.

I've had this problem with every surgery I've ever had. Some people heal
more slowly than others. Scary when it first happens, isn't it? Don't
worry, it won't open any more, if you're thinking that (that's what I
thought the first time!). Keep it covered with a clean dressing. Always
wash your hands before touching it. It will just take time to heal. Good
luck, and congratulations on your surgery and weight loss!

I didn't have staples, only steritape, but I had a small inch long shallow
opening at the top of my incision. I washed it with soap when I showered to
cleanse it and then use Neosporin antibotic salve on it and keep it
bandaged. It closed in 10 to 15 days and isn't noticeably different from
the rest of my incision.
