Question:
How did you handle the Anesthesiologist
I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses and I was wondering if anyone had major difficulty discussing the blood issue with the Anesthesiologist. The doctors can say that they don't mind but usually it is the Anesthesiologist who has the final say. Thank you — sgirl (posted on October 4, 2004)

if it is discussed with your doctor and agreed and on your chart that you
refuse all blood product they cannot give them. However a doctor may refuse
to be on your case if he objects or feels that his right to give safe care
is compromised. Most hospital have a choice of more than one
anesthesiolgist on staff so another might be willing if the first refuses.
This situation is not as unusual as you might think.

As surgeon, I consider myself "captain of the ship" in the
operating room and with regard to planning of the surgery. So does the
legal system. Although I respect and may often ask for the advice of my
anesthesia colleagues, the final say is between the patient and I.
Jehovah's Witnesses require a full discussion regarding the use of
non-blood alternatives, and the approximate risks that surgery would pose.

Im not a JW.. but the 'issue' of blood came up during my 'paperwork' phase,
NOT the anesthesiologist visist. The HOSPITAL had me sign a form whether
or NOT I would approve having blood; I was bascially 'told' you sign it for
blood; or IF you dont - and a 'need' comes up they will let you bleed to
death on the table they will NOT give you blood.
Just dont sign the form.

When I did all my pre-surgery paperwork, this was a topic of discussion by
the administrative office of the hospital where I had my WLS. There was a
form I signed that covered this issue. Be sure to read all the paperwork
well and understand what you're signing, no matter how fast they put it all
in front of you.

power of attorney. You can also mention again to the anesthesiologist that
