Question:
Has anyone experienced weight gain after going on birth control.

My doctor suggested to go on the new Seasonale pill to avoid having 12 periods in a year and that way keep my iron levels stable, with this pill you only get 4 periods in a year, however I've gained 12 lbs in 6 months and I'm scared because I'm still eating very little after 4 years since my surgery.    — Monica J. It was my understanding that we don't fully absorb birth control pills...maybe I'm wrong? Nonetheless, my doc recommended that I use a method such as Depo or the Ortho Evra or the IUD. Maybe you should ask about that? I haven't gained on any bc methods I've used since surgery, but while I was on Depo I didn't lose weight.

I gained weight within weeks of starting seasonale, so I went back to yasmin. My surgeon says there is no medical proof that we don't absorb birth control pills.

The birth control patch!! You can use it to skip periods. I would talk to an OB/GYN who is up on the studies, but the latest word is that we can use whatever our method of bc (except natural) to skip periods. You may get a little breakthrough bleeding, but no bad side effects. I love my patch!! Easy to use, cheap even if the insurance won't pay and no weight gain!! Try it for three month...what's the worst that could happen..you hate it?? It's Orthro Evra, same as in the pills....If you want to email me privately I can give you some more info. Oh, there is also and IUD that makes it so you don't have many periods, but I don't remember the name...

I just stopped seasonale after 4 weeks because i had gained 10 lbs seemingly overnight and had alot of swelling, so I glad to know maybe its not just me. I'm sure its water weight, but who knows how to avoid it. I know my calorie intake hasn't increased.

Clarification on the absorption issue. I also spoke to two gynecologists (in addition to my surgeon two weeks ago) and all said there was no medical proof we don't absorb birth control pills. Also, with seasonale, my appetite increased and I had night sweats.

I KNOW that I don't absorb the pill. Case in point... before surgery, normal with pill; after surgery, still bleeding 24/7/365, the reason for being on the pill in the first place. I had my PCP write a letter to the insurance company explaining this so they would pay for my Depo shot that I have been on since 3 months out (after I realized the pill was failing me).
