Question:
Has anyone had a problem with contact lenses after surgery?
I used to wear contacts a few years ago. Recently I decided to go back to wearing them but seems my eyes aren't happy with them! Eye doc said it is allergies to the lenses. I did not tell them about my WLS, do you think the amount of protein we eat or perhaps the way we absorb has anything to do with my eyes? Wendy — Wendy H. (posted on April 12, 2004)

I have been wearing contacts for about 15 yrs then 2 weeks after surgery
they really bothered me & I had to wear my glasses, but now all is
back to normal & I am wearing them again! Who knows what happened???
Seemed like my eyes were really dry after surgery.

Are you sure it is the contacts? Not something in the solution you soak
them in? (A preservative?) I had surgery 10/02, no problems with lenses and
I have been wearing contacts for 30 years.

I have been wearing contacts for about 20 years now. I had my operation
8/22/03 and have had no problems at all with my eyes or contacts. Maybe a
different solution would help. :) Lisa 284.5/203/160ish

Do you take birth control pills or hormones? Some women have a problem
tolerating contact lenses when they take those medications. Don't know why.

Wendy,
My surgeon said that when you loose a lot of weight that a lot of times it
actually helps you vision. He said that your pressure drops, and your
vision can change. Go figure.

I've worn contacts for years and now 2.5 years after surgery, still wear
them. Maybe you should try a different brand. I know there are some
brands that irritate my eyes while others dont.

What Diane said -- improvements in your blood pressure post-op can change
your intraocular pressure and affect the way your contacts fit. You may
need to be refitted, as lower intraocular pressure may change not only your
prescription, but also the curvature of the front of your eye, and contacts
come in different curvatures to accommodate different shaped eyes. Look at
it this way -- it's an inconvenience, but probably a sign of a good thing
happening to your body! Diana

For a period of time after my surgery my eyes were really dry.The said it
was probably due to the lack of fat in my diet and or nutritional.Either
way it cleared up in a few months but I still occassionally have to use
some lubricating eye drops.
