Question:
Does anyone try to PURPOSELY
It seems like I can't have a BM unless if I eat something "bad". I can go 5-7 days without a BM (sorry to be gross!!) unless if I eat something a little sugary. I don't really like oatmeal, but if I have some with raisins in the morning, it's the only thing that gets me GOING! The only thing is that it makes my heart pound and I get a little feverish and have to rest for a few minutes.. I wish there were some other way, if anyone has any advice? — Jennifer C (posted on January 4, 2003)

jennifer, my best friend told me today that a lady in her support group has
this problem and she solved it by eating one of the "Blue Bunny' sugar
free ice cream sandwiches. They have splenda. She swears this keeps her
regular. Places like Walmart costeco and etc that have dicount supermarkets
sell them. Hope this helps

I use Benifiber in my coffee every morning, no taste, not grit. Works
well.

I've started eating about 5-6 dried prunes at night. Things are better and
I just count it as a fruit for the day.

Have you tried other things? I personally have had the bowel problems too
but I now take Fiberchoice tablets every day and glass of prune juice
before bed and that seems to do the trick. I can't imagine raisins making
you dump. I have eaten them for a snack quite a few times and they never
bothered me. But then again, everyone is different. I would say that if
the raisins scare you, then you could try my suggestion, or even something
else. But if they don't, then there is always that great saying
"stick with what works". Good luck to you! :)

My surgeon has me eat 1/4 cup of Grape Nuts every morning - he suggested
soaking them in Grape Juice (a natural laxative) - it really isn't bad -
just use enough to get them wet so they soften up. But I also put the
cereal in yogurt - yummy. And I eat 3 or 4 prunes or dried apricots every
night - no problems with constipation at all. I do eat raisins sometimes
too - also approved by my surgeon.

When I've been constipated, I've intentionally eaten sf candy which, for
me, causes the runs if I have too much! Yuck!

I'm pretty regular at this point - regular being for me every 2-3 days.
However, when I've been "backed up", I have found Kashi Go Lean
cereal to do the trick...JR

I'm the king of constpation. Sometimes I'll eat some high fiber cerel (8-10
grams of fiber per serving). I can't drink those gritty drinks. Anyway a
doc told me about the Medamusel (spellings wrong) wafers. Walmart has them
in two differnt flavors. They are very tasty and two "get me
going" Now occassionly I'll have one just to keep things moving reg.
They come in a box that has 12 little bags with two waffers each (two is
considered ONE serving).

I have not tried the metamucil wafers. My sister tried them and thought
they were way too dry. I found Metamucil in caplets at out super walmart. I
have not tried them yet, but I know using metamucil powder mixed with water
works for me. But it is hard to drink it down fast enough because it tends
to thicken up if you drink it slow. So I am hopeing the Capsules will do
the same job as he liquid. {{{HUGS}}}

I take one capsule of a probiotic supplement every day called Flora Source
and is made by Golden Health Products that puts 'good' bacteria in your
intestinal system. This seems to do the job for me, and I'm currently
taking a few medications that are known for causing constipation. It's in
capsule form and can be found at a good health food store.

Not sure if this will help, but every time I drink orange juice, to the
potty I go. I am 15 weeks post-op and it ALWAYS helps with the BMs. I drink
about a cup a day (but not in one big gulp!)....By the way, sounds like you
are dumping from the raisins. Many dump on those natural sugars in fruits
and fruit juices. You have to just find the ones that you can tolerate. I
can eat anything sweet (real sugar and natural sugar) without dumping so I
have never experienced it, but from what I have heard, the hot flashes and
racing heart are a part of that (and diarrhea too- I think).....Try to
orange juice and if it doesn't help, contact your surgeon to find out what
they recommend you take. Good luck!..........Karen (lap rny- 9/20/02- down
90 pounds!)

Hi,
I take metamucil caps(two capsules, two to three times daily). I have
been doing this for a couple of weeks now. I 'go' every other day..These go
down a lot better than the mix type..That stuff is terrible..Hope this
helps..

Jennifer, lots of good answers from the others, but since I didnt see mine,
I'll go ahead and add it. If I eat a couple cups of popcorn a day, then I
stay very regular. Its a good carb snack and filling and helps in the bm
department too..

Well, what I ALWAYS do is drink a little prune juice! It is all natural and
ALWAYS works. I'v been taking a 1/2 cup of prune juice every other day
because of taking iron supplements and it works like a charm. I haven't a
problem with it. I don't know why people always frown at prune juice, I
like the taste.

Hi Honey:
I am glad you asked this question, but I have the strangest answer. I
cannot have a bm unless I smoke a cigarette, lol. Whenever I give up
smoking for a few days, I am constipated the entire time, no matter what I
eat. When I go back to smoking, I am regular every day. Not that I am
advocating smoking, but this is really true with me. I did try milk of
magnesia during one of my nonsmoking periods, and had the worst stomach
pain of my life. I don't think that works for everyone. I wish I knew
what to tell you, because this is a horrible problem. Maybe your doctor
could recommend a gentle acting product that would help you. I know you
want to stay away from foods that make you feel bad, but you feel awful
being backed up too. Good luck.

Well, you've heard from the self proclaimed King of constipation, so now
here's the take of the Queen. My PCP suggested 4 oz. of warm prune juice.
I do this and it helps but doesn't quite solve my problem. I can skip a
couple days and gain as much as 6-7 lbs. So I'm still doing what my
surgeon suggested a year ago. I take Correctol or Dulculax every night. My
surgeon said I might have to take them as much as a year. My PCP is
concerned that I may have some adhesions, but I'll need a colonoscopy to
help identify that and I just keep putting that off...Hope one of the many
suggestions help. Good luck.

I chew three FiberChoice tablets a day and that is the one thing beside bad
(HIGH IN FAT)food that makes me go. They sell them everywhere, like at
Target, Walmart, Meijers, etc. 90 tablet is about 10 dollars. They taste
like orange and you chew them up like chewable vitamins. Try them it works!

Are you sure it is the sugar making you go or the fiber in the oatmeal? I
eat oatmeal from time to time along with whole wheat bread/pasta and fruits
and veggies. It usually keeps me moving along at a bearable pace. Splenda
is really good in oatmeal. Have you tried that? I also think that physical
activity helps. I have been walk/running every other day for the last
couple of weeks and boy have I been a lot more regular. I guess it
stimulates the bowels. LOL Good luck I know what you're going thru and it
ain't pretty!
