Question:
Will venous insufficiency cause problems with the surgery?
I have read that blod clots sometimes form in the lower extremities due to blood pooling. I was diagnosed with venous insufficiency not too long ago, I have these dark spots all over my lower legs. Anyhow I was wondering if Im at a bigger risk at getting a clot, and if so what can I do to prevent the clots. — [Anonymous] (posted on June 15, 2001)

I also have venous insufficiency in both of my legs. I had WLS a year ago
and at the time was taking blood thinners, used a Jobst pump on my legs,
had the Jobst support custom made hose, and had suffered from this for
about 10 years. Twp years ago I had a Greenfield Filter placed in the vena
cava so that if I had any deep vein blood clots that decided to move, I
wouldn't be at such a huge risk. My Dr. had me stop taking the blood
thinners about 5 days pre-op. He was very aware of the problems. When I
came out of surgery they had pumps on both of my legs. They were kept on
for several days when I was in bed. I made sure I was up and walking as
soon as possible to further prevent blood clots. I have now lost about
160#, will always have the venous insufficiency, but I am not on blood
thinners. I still have some superficial blood clots but because of the
weight loss, I do not have the edema and swelling. My legs do not ache at
night like they use to. This was also one of my co-morbidities in the
insurance approval process. If you have further questions, please feel
free to email me. Good luck.
