Question:
How should I use Protein Supplements
I am 7 weeks post-op and am just begining to use protein shakes and bars. Should I drink these in place of breakfast,lunch,and dinner or should they be in addition to these meals? — Michelle P. (posted on May 26, 2001)

While you're learning to pace your eating to hold your pouch size down, a
drink probably will take the place of a meal. I no longer count a protein
as a meal, but as a drink, and do them between meals, like I would any
other beverage. Since I do 4-6 drinks per day, it just makes it easier. I
consider half a bar as a meal, though. BUT I do not consider it protein,
even though the label reads 35g of protein. It's food protein, so since I
cannot be certain of the absorption, I simply don't count it. Like Barb,
I'm not convinced that bars during the rapid wt loss are a great idea.
They're very filling and may set one up for cravings one might not get for
another 2 yrs normally.
