Question:
Has anyone had a bad phych eval overturned?
I made a big mistake and went to a counseler how knew nothing about the surgery and he wasnt even a Doctor. I don't think he liked fat people. He never even told me what he had decided, just sent the letter to the surgen. BC/BS has denied me because. He said I only want to look better and could never stick to the diet. I made a appointment with a real Doctor for later this month ,One who deals with this surgery. Im going to have to pay for it myself and Im wondering if it worth it. Has anyone out there had a phych eval overturned? Nancy — Nancy S. (posted on April 5, 2001)

I was referred to a psychologist by my surgeon, and even though the
psychologist thought I was okay for the surgery, he told the surgeon that
he couldn't recommend me based on the results of my MMRI (the personality
inventory with over 500 silly questions). My surgeon would NOT do the
surgery on me...just because of that. But after talking to the
psychologist, I convinced him that my tests results on a standardized test
did not necessarily represent my feelings about this surgery or why I
wanted it. He then recommended me for the surgery and the surgeon agreed.
If the person you saw was not even a doctor, and you do have another
appointment with a different person, just ask your surgeon's office to
disregard the opinion of the first one because YOU do not feel he
understood you. Better yet, ask your surgeon to refer you to a
psychologist or psychiatrist of his choice. He'll more than likely
consider the second opinion more valuable than the first.
