Question:
Does it matter how far away you go for the surgery?
The surgery I am interested in is not available in my area. I would prefer to have the surgery done with a particular Dr. as well. Assuming my insurance will cover a Dr. out of state, is it crazy to travel 2000 miles to go to the hospital and Dr. of your choice? What are some things I need to consider about traveling that far. I know there are support groups locally when I return, so that's comforting. — Danine N. (posted on March 20, 2001)

Not at all crazy.. After 8 months on research I knew I wanted "Fobi
Pouch" .. I live in Oklahoma and there was only one board certified
surgeon and he only does RNY undivided version.. I wanted two major
things in my choice of surgery and that was non-stretchable pouch that was
divided/separated from the rest of the stomach and I was willing to travel
over 900 miles from Oklahoma to Nashville, TN for this procedure.. Be
prepared when traveling this distance on any surgery type to stay in
town at least until staples and tubes are removed.. I arrived in
Nashville two days prior to surgery for additional testing for blood
clots, because of the distanced I traveled by car, I was high risk for
blood clots.. after surgery and my 5 day stay in the hospital, I stayed at
a nearby motel for 8 more days.. I got one with microwave and frig so
that I could warm broth, and keep yogurt, sugar free popcicles, and
water handy. My surgeon allowed me to travel back home after staples and
tube was removed with instructions to get out of car and walk every 45
min. Good Luck in what ever you decide.
