Does it matter how far away you go for the surgery?

The surgery I am interested in is not available in my area. I would prefer to have the surgery done with a particular Dr. as well. Assuming my insurance will cover a Dr. out of state, is it crazy to travel 2000 miles to go to the hospital and Dr. of your choice? What are some things I need to consider about traveling that far. I know there are support groups locally when I return, so that's comforting.
