Question:
Paxil & weight gain. Will the use of Paxil inhibit my weight loss?
I am under the impression that taking Paxil will cause weight gain. I've been on it for about 5 years and am not sure I would attribute all my weight gain to Paxil, but possibly some! I am now on a lower dosage than previously but am still concerned about the possibility of not being able to lose as rapidly or as well while taking this drug. I went without it for almost 5 days after surgery (maybe more) and I found myself with rather emotional over all sorts of things. But depression wasn't one of them! However, I was afraid of not taking it as I know quitting suddenly is not good. What are your thoughts? Lacy — Lacy G. (posted on November 16, 2000)

Lacy, I don't know if Paxil can contribute to weight gain or slow weight
loss. However, your pharmacist may be able to tell you if that is one of
the side effects of Paxil. You should be aware that recent research is
showing that many people experience withdrawal symptoms when coming off of
Paxil because of its short half life. Perhaps your PCP could shift you to
a different med if you find the Paxil problematic?

Hi Lacy,
I take Paxil also...but, my surgeon doesn't have any concerns about it
causing weight gain. But, that could just be me. As for not taking
it...it can cause rebound depression (even agression) if you stop taking
it. If I forget to take it (and I have!)...anyone and everyone can tell
about 3 days later...hahaha. Talk to your pharmacist, surgeon...or look it
up, I think www.intelihealth.com is great! Anyway, don't just quit
(especially if you've been taking it awhile, okay). Take care and God
bless~Terri
