Question:
Does anyone have the feeling that food is stuck in their esophagus?
I have acid reflux for the last 5 years or so. I have been taking Prilosec, It has been working well, But latley it seems that my food is stuck and it kind of hurts in the lower throat. I am hopeing that this will goaway after surgery. Any input? Thanks Debbie H — peaceangel58 (posted on October 5, 2000)

My mother has something which sounds exactly like what you are describing.
She was diagnosed with a hiatel hernia. You might want to check with your
doctor about this and good luck!

Very likely, yes, if you are doing a transected (divided) RNY. Once that
acid gets locked away in the "old stomach", your pouch will be
safe from that awful "hot rock" feeling. How much longer do you
need to wait?

I'm not sure if you are saying that you have had the surgery yet or not but
if you have had it let me tell you something that happened to me yesterday.
I ate something to fast and I had major pain in my esophagus for about 5
minutes. I too had problems with reflux before surgery. It was pain not
much different from what you are talking about. Not sure if that helps but
thought I would share.

Debra- I know exactly what you're feeling. I thought it was just REALLY
bad acid reflux, but after an endoscopy that was needed prior to insurance
approval for RNY surgery, I found out that I have Hiatal Hernia. My
surgeon says the RNY procedure will eliminate the acid reflux as well as
the hernia.

My VBG was in 85 and my "Y" was an early version (87) to correct
staple problem from the VBG. I still have a non-functioning pouch. I take
Prevacid for reflux but wake up choking/coughing and spitting up small food
(e.g. rice). Sometimes I cough because the food has gone in wind pipe.
Prevacid does not seem to be working in the pouch. Any insights as to what
is going on with me.
