Question:
I want to know if anyone has experienced two pap smears before surgery that were irre
gular, would you proceed with the Mini Gastric Bypass before you had this problem checked out with a Gynocologist? Back in July 2000, I had my preoperative physical with my PCP and my pap smear report came back with the words "Atypical cells present." Therefore, my PCP urged me to have another one the first of Sept 2000 which I did. The second one has come back the same with the same words. Has anyone has this type experience, and I would like some advice on this. My surgeon hopes to schedule me in the next couple or three weeks for the Mini Gastric Bypass, as I have completed all my paperwork. I had a similar problem last year with a pap smear, and a gyno said everything was fine, after I went through several tests. Being 56 years old (and very young at heart) I think it may just be a menopause problem. Thanks for responding. Kate — Kate F. (posted on September 26, 2000)

I have had atypical pap smears (they even used the phrase
"precancerous cells" a few times) every year for the past five
years and I am 33. As long as that is ALL they are discovering, they are
doing nothing else. Just be sure to make an appt or two every year and
don't forget ... while I am not a doctor, I hope this isn't something that
would bar you from surgery.

I had a pap smear that came back "atypical cells present."
Because I had a Grandmother who had reproductive cancer, I insisted on a
further explanation of the assessment. In my case, it turned out the I had
a urinary tract infection and a mild yeast infection. Those were treated
and I was in fine shape. Perhaps you might question your physician a bit
more about the results.

I wouldn't take any extra chances with your health. With something that
could potentially get worse with time, I would act as quickly as possible.
I was in the same boat about a year and a half ago. I ended up having
cryosurgery (in the Dr's office...not a big deal) you then follow up w/more
paps (they are SOOOOOO fun) and fortunately for me everything has turned
out good...so far. Anyway, I wouldn't take any chance. I would get the
information from your Gyno, but go ahead and schedule the surgery anyway,
you can always change it if necessary, but I really can't imagine the Gyno
part impacting the surgery (I think I would try to get the Gyno part...if
something is needed done before surgery...just for comfort reasons). Good
Luck!

I too was Atypical in fact my PCP wanted me to have a hysterectomy before I
had my weight loss surgery. But my gyn told me she didn't want to touch me
because in the past she had a rough time tying my tubes. So she gave me the
go ahead to have the weight loss surgery. So glad she did. I was having
irregular periods, fibroid cyst and I had a cryo done. You name I had it
done. I have lost around 85lbs. No abnormal periods no cysts no irregular
paps. I go to see the gyn again in November for a clean bill of health.
Good luck to you.
