Question:
I understand you must quit smoking for 10 days before surgery... when can you resume.
I really enjoy smoking and feel it would be to tramatic to quit eating and smoking at the same time. I understand you need to quit smoking for the 10 days before surgery, but what about after surgery? Are there any restrictions? Thank you — marlene R. (posted on August 19, 2000)

Marlene, please check w/ your doctor about post-op complications that may
be caused by smoking. I was told be my doctor that it could cause ulcers.

Let me say, as a person who can't stop overeating, I know how you feel!
But, on one of the sites I looked at the surgeon recommends the following:
stop smoking 6 weeks prior to surgery, and never start again. That would
be an ideal world, and I sure wish you the best in your battle with smoke!

I started the minute I got out of the hospital and into the car.

I smoked for 25 yers and quit 3 weeks prior to my surgery and am thankful I
did. I used the patch and it was a godsend. Surgery date 8-16-00, no
problems at all. Came home sunday 8-21-00 as if this morning down 8lbs. You
will be able to breath better and feel better.
