What's next?
Utilization review committee at my PCPs medical group denied his request for me to be referred for consultation to a gastric surgeon. They say I haven't had enough "conservative management". Recommending a nutritionist (have an appointment in July) and physical therapy (what's this for??) I've already had foot surgery in April because of problem due to weight, podiatrist wants to operate on the other foot now because of another problem due to weight. I can hardly walk. Have developed diabetes now, have GERD, and strong family history of heart disease. What do I do next? — Carol A. (posted on June 15, 2000)

Carol....I too would find a new PCP as soon as possible. You are the same
age as I am, and my biggest fear is I'm wasting time fighting with the
insurance when some surgeons will not do this surgery if you are over 55
years old. I too am with a self pay HMO. Don't give up!
