Question:
How long to wait to go to the gym?
This question might be in the data base, but thought I'd ask it any way. I won a months membership at a local gym, and I thought that it would be a great way to start getting myself into shape after surgery. My question is, just how long do you suppose I would or will have to wait to start going to get the maximum benefits from it. I will probably have to reserve a spot soon since I won it a couple weeks ago. I don't want to go too soon, but then again I don't want to wait too long either. Thanks for your help guys. — allendepot1 (posted on May 4, 2000)

I'm sure your surgeon will tell you to wait at least 6 weeks due to all the
cutting and sewing/stapling inside. You aren't to strain hard or lift more
than 10 pounds before that. There might be some light things you could do
before that - but then you wouldn't be getting the full benefit of the gym.
Prior to that, just do some walking and take your vitamins and build
yourself up while your body heals. Best wishes.

Most people wait about 4-6 weeks before working out at a gym. But you can
certainly do the treadmill and low impact aerobics at that time. You may
have to hold off on some of the weight lifting/resistence training to avoid
abdominal strain, but can work on arm and upper body areas and the legs and
buttocks, too. Water exercises are usually done after the incision has
healed and certainly there should be no drainage. But going to the gym and
exercisng aerobically is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
And as the weight comes off, the exercising gets easier as there is less to
lug around!!! But again, be sure the exercise is aerobic. There are
several good books out, one of the best and most practical is by Covert
Bailey called The Ultimate Fit or Fat. (1999) Also Stop the Insanity by
Susan Powter.
