Question:
Can wls be done at the same time as a lumbar fusion?
I have 3 herniated discs in my lumbar spine. My docs want to do a fusion/discectomy. Since they have to go thru my belly for the fusion anyway, I was wondering if both surgeries could be done together. I don't want to be cut twice. — Starla S. (posted on December 20, 1999)

I had a spinal fusion in 98. I doubt that they can do that since where
they cut you for the fusion is off to the side on your belly. Mine was
also much lower than where my stomach is located. Maybe you should do the
surgery for WLS first. It would make the back surgery much easier on you.
Also, maybe the weight loss would improve your back enough that major back
surgery wouldn't be necessary. If you have any questions about either of
my surgeries, feel free to email me. Good luck!
