Question:
Any ideas on insurance companies that will take an individual post op patient?
I am a 1 year post op patient who has been under grad school insurance till this coming August. I am finding it difficult to find insurance companies who will take me. I will not be working this year (2 kids in kindergarten) and need my own insurance. Any ideas? — Jeanie E. (posted on June 18, 2005)

I've encountered the same difficulty. Either they say no, or charge you an
extremely outrageous premium. Some states have a health insurance pool.
The monthly premium is usually more, but at least they cover you. I don't
know where to ask, but I know a lot of states offer this. Good luck

It will probably be expensive to get personal coverage. I'm assuming you
don't have a partner who you can get health care through... as the
previous poster said, you might have some luck with the state.
A potential everything-else-failed would be to find a very very part-time
job that would allow you to buy into their health insurance. Generally,
health insurance through employment is cheaper and has a premium that is
not dependent on health history.
Best wishes,

I have the same problem at 2 years out. I'm in the process of applying for
a state program. Here in CO it's called Cover Colorado. It's a program
for people who aren't easily insurable for one reason or another. It's
iron that Anthem paid for the surgery, but now won't insure me because of
the surgery.

Check with the Department of Insurance in your state and ask them if they
have a guarantee issue health insurance company and they should be able to
direct you to a couple.
