Question:
Has anyone had gastric problems durning pregancy.
I have had wonderfull sucess with my RNY of almost 3 years now, losing 180 pounds. I have gained the normal 20 pounds at my 7 month mark. I had morning sickness for 3 months which I contribute to just being pregnant. For the last month I have had horrible upper stomach pain and cramps. I'm so afraid we may be overlooking a possible complication with the RNY and I wonder if other expecting mothers have developed problems that needed medical attention other than OB care. When should I say hey this isn't right and start making them run medical screens? — karlahill (posted on April 7, 2005)

Hi there. I had gastric bypass almost 4 yrs ago and was also quite
successful (-150) and am currently 7 months pregnant with an average
person's weight gain at 7 months preggo also. Have they tested your urine
for protein or considered pre-eclampsia? I am being monitored for that
because of elevated blood pressure in the third tri., and I do recall upper
gastric pain as a possible side affect of that condition (I haven't had
that) along with protein in the urine (that either, yet)... Just a thought.
Congrats on both the weightloss success and the pregnancy! Best wishes.

I'd suggest posting this one on the post-op pregnancy forum on here. As far
as I know, no one I talk to regularly there has had serious surgery-related
complications, though. One thing Ihave heard of being a problem is
adhesions, but they are rare. I'd talk to the OB and ask for more help
looking into this. Of course, it could be as simple as extreme
constipation. Trust me, I know this one--I thought I was DYING! And I'm
only 6 months pregnant now, being told it onlly gets worse, if I don't take
care of it right.
I'd say anytime you're concerned and in pain, it's time for you to say what
you suggested, "hey,t his isn't right" and start making them do
more tests. You know your body better than anyone else and there's no
reason to suffer, especially with baby on board! Good luck!

HI,
I am 28wks preg and almost 2 yrs post op. I lost just about 200 pounds! I
have a bad hernia that has come into play and put me in the hospital a
month ago. I thought something was all kinked up. They really didn't want
to run test other than blood due to possbl risk. It was the worst stomach
pain ever. Just thought I'd share that. Congrats and good luck.
