Question:
I need to know how many calories and fat
I watch what I eat. I never eat anything wrong, at least I dont think so. I never try sweets, breads, sodas. I dont want to. I just want to know what other post op people are doing as far as calories and fat consimed each day. I can eat normal foods now , I am almost 3 months out. On a usual day I eat a light yogurt, 1 piece of turkey bacon, lunch I have a atkins advantage bar, I eat some sort of shaved turkey or other shaved meat, maybe an ounce or 2, 1 slice of cheese, and then for snack a protein shake. I just hope its not too many calories and fat grams per day to continue losing . I have lost 35lbs as of my 2 month check up and have not weighed my self since. I go to the dr tomorrow so I will see. I just wanted to hear from some older post ops that have it down pretty good on how to maintain the weight loss by keeping the calories under control and fat . I walk 4x a week too. thanks for any info. sorry this is so lengthy. melinda — taterbug898 (posted on February 8, 2005)

IMHO I don't think YOu are eating enough You can't be getting in enough
calories. You should get between 8oo-1000 daily, or your body will start
holding on because you are probably burning more than you are eating. Fat I
was told not to count because we don't really absorb it anymore. Best

Like the previous poster said, I wouldn't worry too much about fat. I lost
most of my weight while eating cashews just about every day for 6+
months...talk about fat! Anyway, how many calories is a different
story...one that I think is somewhat different for everyone. There are
also many conflicting opinions out there...so, I would suggest you track
every thing you eat for a few days - including your protien drinks - and
see where you come out. Then, go from there - try adding calories if need
be. But, remember, we are all different, and what may work for someone
else might not work for you. For example, I am two years out. I could
never eat more than like 1/2 cup at a time until I was like 9 months out.
Even now, I just discovered (by tracking my calories) that I can't lose
weight unless I keep between 900-1400 calories a day! Also remember that
the less you weigh, the less calories you need to maintain that weight...so
it is a bit of a balancing act. Right now, depending on your weight you
might actually do better with a few more calories - so your body doesn't
think it's starving to death. But, 50 pounds from now, that same amount
might be too much. Listen to your body...unless it's asking for twinkies!

My suggestion is to write down every bite that goes into your mouth for a
week or two then bring that to a dietician. I did trck on fit day for a
couple weeks, wrote down all I ate, tracked the calories, protein grams,
fats , and carbs and brought the whole 2 weeks worth in to the dietician
and had her look it over. fit day wll also track avarages by the week or
month, so I took in those averages too. It was a big help and I got some
good input. It was a big help, and practice makes perfect. now at 2+ years
out I know what to eat each meal to meet my goals. I also use the south
beach diet book meal menus for ideas. I won't say I faithfully follow south
beach but my usual is close to phase 2, plus a little more fruit. Your diet
looks pretty low in calories to me, I couldn't make it on that intake. I
also have to add that even tho we may malabsorb SOME fat, I still limit my
intake and keep it to the healthy fats from salmon, olive oil, nuts
(sparingly as they are so high in calories.) I have to add also, some
people may lose like crazy eating anything they want, but as time goes on
and they get hungrier and able to at more It might make it higher risk for
significant regain. I learned that at Christmas when I gained around 5
pounds eating cookies. Cheating makes it a lot harder to get back on the
straight and narrow than just staying on it all the time as much as
possible. Now is the time to eat for health. bless you and good luck.
