Question:
Short Term Disability questions
My insurance co will pay for a tummy tuck and I will pay the balance for a LBL. Do anyone know if short term disability (Met Life) will pay since the LBL is considered cosmetic? They did pay 66% of my salary when I had WLS, but I don't know how this works for reconstructive and/or cosmetic procedures. Does anyone know? If a tummy tuck requires me to miss work for 2 weeks, but the LBL for 6 weeks, will Met Life cover the longer recovery time? Thanks! — Yolanda J. (posted on May 26, 2004)

I suggest looking at the policy. I reviewed my company's STD policy and
all I need is for the Dr. to call the insurance company and tell them the
procedure being done and the estimate recovery time. My policy does not
state anything about the reason for me having to be off work.

Mine didn't even have to know what was going on. They just needed a
statement from my doctor that I would be having a surgery and would be out
of work for a certain period of time.

Typically, if you can show that the MEDICAL carrier is paying for the
surgery, then the disability carrier pays for the disability. Just send
them proof from the medical carrier that you were approved for surgery.
However, if the medical carrier denied you as cosmetic, the disability
carrier will as well.
