Question:
I was curious about the final weight loss for those that have always been obese

I am 31, 5'54", 245lbs. and have been obese to morbidly obese since childhood. I was curious to learn from others like me what their total weight loss was after WLS. I have heard that if you were not overweight your whole like that you tend to lose more and get into the smaller sizes...0-6. Is this true? Thanks    — Tiffany B. (posted on January 23, 2004)

Since I haven't had surgery yet (still in the approval process) I don't really know for sure, but in talking with my surgeon us "lightweights" have a much better shot at getting down to ideal. That being said, he also told me that the smaller your stomach ends up, the better your chances. Dr. Allen told me that since he started doing the RNY lap, his patients have had better success because he is able to make the pouch much smaller to begin with because of the magnification. Since the pouch is smaller to start with, it ends up smaller. He says his ends up about a cup where open is usually about twice that. So, since you can eat less, you will have a better time losing. I think Dr. Allen actually prefers to see his patients about our size (I am very similar in ht/wt to you) because we tend to do better. Yes, you have to follow directions and listen to your body, but if you eat less, you lose more. That's my take on it as a pre-op. Hopefully I'll have better information as a post-op.

I have been obese my whole life. When I had WLS I was 5'7 276. Today I'm at 139, my goal was 145. I've heard that "lightweights" and shorter folks have a better shot at reaching goal but I dont know if thats true or not. Every one is different so every one will have a different out come. Good luck to you. ~Sidney~ Open RNY 10-23-02 down 130+

I am 25 years old and started at 249 lbs 5'8" tall size 22. My surgery was 4/24/03 and I now weigh 130 lbs size 3. I have been over weight for about the past 6-8 years. I was never small like I am now. I was told all my life I was big boned, which I am not. I have to wear a belt with my size 3 pants to hold them up. I do not think I ever wore a size 3 in high school or even junior high school. I never expected to get below a size 7-8. I am not sure if it is typical but I just think everyone's body us different. Good Luck

I'm 5'2 and weighed 248. I was always heavy except for about ages birth to 5 and for maybe 1 year in High School. I'm now 40 and weigh 125. I wear a size 4. In High School when I weighed 130, I wore a size 13!!! Go figure.

Always been overweight except for a "few minutes" in my 20's and then again in my 30's when I lost and started putting it back on immediately. I am 5 foot and 1/4 inches tall, starting weight 252 now weigh 122 twelve months after surgery. Size 4! Good luck and God Bless! 252/122

I am 47, had RNY 10/29/02 and am down 60 lbs. Started at (5'3") 240 lbs. I first heard the word "diet' when I was about 7 years old! I tried just about every diet out there - including doing Optifast twice! I don't know if I will ever get to my ideal weight. I haven't lost anything in the last 8 months, despite following the rules, doing weight training, having my basal metabolic rate checked, doing aerobic exercise (walking, stationary bike, elipical) on a regular basis. I have been described as "Alice made over" - she was my grandmother on my dad's side - not only do I resemble her in my face, but she was also short and fat! I believe that genetics plays a part in how much you wind up weighing. On the other hand, even at my current weight, I can wear 12-14 size tops, and 10 to 12 in jeans. I am not saying that you won't be able to get into smaller sizes,; you just have to wait and see what happens!
