Question:
what can I expect to happen when I stop my birth control
I have never been off of hormones...since I was 17. I will be 30 in 10 days. Surgery scheduled for Dec 29th. Right now I am having my period (on schedule) removed my patch last Tuesday (I use Wednesday for my change the patch day so I can avoid having my period over the weekend). What can I expect for the next 3 weeks before surgery? Will I have any weight loss? Any other symptoms? I know I have to wait a month after surgery to go back on. YES, I know the patch supposedly isn't as effective above 200 lbs BUT you have to have sex to get preggers and I can't recall the last time we had intercourse. Usually just fool around. — alise007 (posted on December 8, 2003)

I stopped my BC before my surgery and I had no side effects, I started my
period 2 days after surgery which is pretty common. Usually it starts right
after you have your surgery. Good Luck!

Hey Shannon - I don't have any advice for you prior to the surgery but.....
I started the patch after my procedure. It was about 7-months post-op. I
stopped because I was bleeding too much, had about 2-cycles in 6-weeks.
Anyway, after I stopped I lost a great deal of weight. So it actually
helped me loose even more weight.

Have you ever considered using another form of birth control without
hormones? I have an IUD, it's great...no pills or nasty side-effects. Try
that, it also won't affect your weight loss!

Sorry to sound stupid, but I'm trying to figure out why you would have to
quit the patch just because of surgery??

Kimeberly, I believe the docs want birth control users to stop using prior
to surgery because there is a higher risk of developing blood clots.
Here is a good article on bllod clots and some of the things that can cause
them:
