Question:
Getting in protein with carnation instant breakfast
I am hoping to have surgery soon. My doctor gave me a list of good sources of protein. At the top was one envelope of no sugar added Carnation instant breakfast with one cup of skim milk --- 14 gm of protein. I see a lot of people asking how to get in their protein. I know the protein drinks and the protein bars are not too tasty at all. Has anyone tried carnation??? 3-4 cups of this a day and you would have in your protein. That doesn't seem to hard to handle, of course I haven't actually tried it yet. Anyone who has???? — Carrie C. (posted on October 8, 2003)

I've enjoyed carnation instant breakfast with milk and I would usually add
protein powder to it too. Yummy...especially a little bit frozen. The
problem some post ops have with it is that it is made with milk which is
not recommended on Atkins. I've done just fine losing weight without being
a strict Atkins person. I say enjoy it.

Can this be made w/ water for those lactose intolorant people? How is it
warmed like hot chocolate? A little frozen does sound yummy...espeically
the vanilla and strawberry (although I don't see those flavors locally) I
found some while on vacation at a small AF super store...

I did a comparison between the NSA Carnation Instant Breakfast and SF
Nestle Quick. There wasn't much difference in the amount of sugar, carbs
and Protein. This was just in the dry powder. The problem with using milk
as a source of protein is that 1. some people are or become lactose
intolerant after surgery, 2. some people (such as myself) think milk is
just yucky! 3. milk has a lot of sugar and carbs and 4. milk is a food
protein which means that it must be broken down by the digestive process in
order to be absorbed. Now I know that I paid a lot of money to my dr. to go
in and mess my digestive process up so that it doesn't work too well. So it
is much better to get a good quality whey protien shake to drink, that way,
the protein is more bio-available. There is not as much work needed to
break it down and we can absorb a good majority of it. I always suggest Pro
Score 100 in chocolate. It's pretty tasty and I make it with water in a
Tupperware shaker cup and pour it over ice. Very fast and easy. There are
several places you can by it online, I get mine from Michelle Curran, the
Vitalady.

My nutritionist recommended 3 cups of milk a day...w/ or w/out the CIB. My
first problem is that I HATE milk. My second problem is that milk has too
much natural sugar and tends to make me feel a bit 'dumpy'...and
nausesous/gassy. But most of all, why would I want to choke down three
cups of that when I can get the same amount of protien (that is much more
easily absorbed) in 6 ounces of protien powder for about 60 cents.
Although, I do have to say this...if CIB is the only way you can get in
your protein...then better that then none at all!

The major problem with this is that a lot of people become lactose
intolerant after surgery. There is lactose free milk but even that bothers
some people. My surgeon didn't allow any milk products til we were 3
months post.

I was sceptical about the cib, however I have tried itrecently and use it
for a fast on the road breakfast or to carry in my lunch bag at work. the
advantage is that it mixes easily with a spoon, and tastes great. I also
use designer whey protein powder, avail at vitalady or at GNC. I really
think it is personal coice. my program ,Bariatric treatment center, has
many thousands of very successful wls patients (my doc has > 1500
surgeries performed alone, not including all the other surgeons in the
program) and recommends we drink milk if we can tolerate it and
recommends CIB.

Hi There!
Oh God .....Yes! Carnation Breakfast was my main staple for protein. Up
until my 6th month I drank 1 or 2 a day. Once I found Carb Solutions (11oz
can/Creamy Vanillia/21 grams protein)I faithfully drink 1 or 2 a day
everyday and from time to time drink a pack of Carnation Breakfast for old
times sake. lol Good Luck! Lap Rny...2/11/03... 250/152/140

I agree with Allison. Proscore 100 Chocolate is a much better
chocolate-flavored protein powder than CIB (much higher in protein, too,
with no milk needed). JMHO. :-)

When we are newly postop, most of us are on liquids for a period of time.
For variety it is good to try many different things to drink that have some
good nutritional value. NSA CIB is just 1 of many different drinks to try.
If you are lactose intolerant than you won't continue with CIB but if you
are like me and can use skim milk, which by the way is a nutritious
beverage carbs and all, then go ahead and try the CIB. It shouldn't be
your only protein based drink, try the protien powders too. I use an
unflavored one from GNC that I add nsa hot chocolate mix to along with skim
milk. CIB is available in my area but the NSA CIB is only available in the
U.S. I have already put in a complaint to the Canadian office of Carnation
products.

I use Unjury chocolate protein powder. Mixed with 6 ounces of skim milk you
get 26 grams of protein and it tastes just like chocolate milk. I tried
many protein powders/drinks/bars and did not like any of them till I found
Unjury. They have samples, just email Jerome and ask for them. His email is
on the webiste. www.unjury.com
I have heard some people become lactose intolerant but I have never known
anyone personally that has become that way after surgery. I wonder what the
precentages are.
BTW, unjury can also be mixed with water.

Our surgeon lists No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast among his
protein supplement options. Among the five of us who have had WLS, we each
tried several other products but ultimately came back to the CIB as our
"supplement of choice"....tasty, inexpensive in comparison to
other supplements, easy to prepare. As others have mentioned,
approximately 30% of RNY patients develop some degree of lactose
intolerance post-op. If you begin to experience abdominal cramping,
nausea, or diarrhea after intake of any type of dairy products, try
eliminating them entirely from your diet for 48 hours. If the symptoms
disappear, that would be highly suspicious for lactose intolerance, and you
would need to find a non-dairy-based product. Best wishes!

I drink no sugar added CIB and store brand NSA instant breakfast drink. I
found that the Kroger brand has 2 more grams of protein and of course is
cheaper. I sometimes blend my chocolate with peanut butter and banana for
a yummy drink.

I'm not a fan of milk (but I was--oh boy, was I). 4 cups a day would get
you 48g of sugar, or 2 Milky Ways. Alison already explained why it's not
much more than empty calories to us. I think the NSA CIB is 7g sugar, so
at 19g per shake, you'd be getting 76g sugar per day, then whatever is in
food. ProScore 100 delivers 32g protein, 0g sugar. Pure Whey stack is the
same, but a few g sugar (low). Some wil shake up in a few oz of water (no
sugar, no calories). I do both of these brands myself, but my husband uses
something else. There are well over 100 MORE from which to choose. I do not
consider bars protein, either, for the same reasons Alison stated--can't
break them down. But some proteins DO taste yucky (my husband's
favorite--lol) and some are ecstasy in a glass.

Have you tried Soy Protein? GNC makes a good one, and so does Carb
Solutions and EAS Advantage. They have natural sugars, so the taste is
similar to CIB, but without the dairy (which is a major problem for me).
The GNC brand has 25 grams of protein per serving. I mix the chocolate in
a blender with ice, 1/2 banana, 4 frozen strawberries, and a few pineapply
chunks, and it tastes like a Banana Split Blizzard from Dairy Queen! Yum
Yum!
